Has anyone swapped a 2010 1500 rear end into a 2013 1500? I found one for sale locally with the 3.92 gearing and I currently have the 3.21 so would like to swap them over. Is it do able?
If I remember right, it's pretty much plug n play. Also, the 2010 rear end is much more desirable because the ring gear is bolted to the carrier, whereas the 2013+ has the ring gear welded.
As long as your truck is 2wd. if you have a 4x4, you'll need the front as well.
If I'm mistaken, someone correct me.
Are you sure the rear end gear is welded? I thought that only applied to the front.
The rear has always been bolted Ken,it's the front ZF that they welded the ring gear to the carrier. No, i'm not certain. That could very well be the case.
My early 4th gen 1500 (2009) needs rear diff work soon. My question is what size set do I need for my front and rear diff's if I wanted to go from 3.92 to 4.56 ?The rear has always been bolted Ken,it's the front ZF that they welded the ring gear to the carrier.
The earlier AAM 8.25" front diff uses a bolt in ring gear though
You’d need both to be 4.56. If I recall correctly the front diff will need to be machined out to fit the 4.56 gears tho.My early 4th gen 1500 (2009) needs rear diff work soon. My question is what size set do I need for my front and rear diff's if I wanted to go from 3.92 to 4.56 ?
Ever thought of doing the 8 speed swap instead. You could keep your original 3.92's,and have alot more torque multiplication in the first couple of gears. You'd need damn near need 6.00:1 in the diffs to match the torque multiplication of the 8HP70's 4.71:1 first gear and your original 3.92'sMy early 4th gen 1500 (2009) needs rear diff work soon. You're front diff should be the older AAM diff,i also think your rear diff will be the 9.25 AAM diff, but you'll want to check both and make sureYour right but I just rebuilt my 545 with a 68rfe input drum and berg/warner over drives, trans go kit in my pump for the accumulator and line pressure, a edge 3000 stall from Moes performance and a rev max valve body gasket, sonnax ssv and accumulator plate.
1 week exactly after doing all that my rear diff started making shuddering noise when I let off the gas. Still not sure exactly what it is yet just that its deff from the rear diff bc I brought it back to the transmission shop that did the work bc I thought something else went with the tranny.
They traced the sound to the diff. So Im weighing options on regearing or just getting it fixed. The shop told me first make sure that I can actually get a 4.56 gear kit for the front and rear for my yesr 1500. So does anyone know the diff sizes or parts I would need ?

I had a guy hit me 1992 Chevy perpendicular to the passenger rear wheel. In the following days I noticed a clunking rear differential. The impact with me moving must have momentarily caused my rear differential some kind of internal damage. As I was driving, that cross pin was shot out through my rear differential cover. Oh, the smell of rear differential fluid ! That pin doesn’t look broken. My pin came out whole. I had my differential rebuilt. No way I would take a chance on a used one.Has anyone ever seen this happen in their rear diff ? Its the pin that holds the axles together with the gears.
I had my whole rear axle swapped with a axle that had 156k on it rather than paying t almost 2 k for everything replaced. Guy even did new seals and axles bearings on it for 800 installed.
Point is, is that the shop that did the work said they had never in 24 years seen that pin ever snap like that in any truck. View attachment 580597
