So this morning on my way to school, some ******* cop with nothing better to do decided to pull me over for my lightly tinted tail lights in which you can still clearly see red without even pressing the brakes and with the reverse lights still uncovered by any tint. So now I have to "fix" them, even though there is nothing to fix, or pay a ticket.

My question is where can I find oem quality led tail lights with black housings that are "legal"? I have looked at recon but if I can pay less for some of the same quality it'd be nice.

Get a list of cars that come stock with tinted tails with some pics of those and yours and go fight the ticket.
Cars as early as 1988 Thunderbirds had tinted tails. Chevy Trailblazers also came with them stock.
That's all if yours are truly "lightly" tinted. If they look black like most of them you'll lose.

They really aren't fully black

Add some red led tail/brake/turn signal ligjts to your rear bumper. If the texas law is similar to the Illinois law which reads as follows:

Every motor vehicle, trailer, or semi-trailer shall also exhibit at least 2 lighted lamps, commonly known as tail lamps, which shall be mounted on the left rear and right rear of the vehicle so as to throw a red light visible for at least 500 feet in the reverse direction,

Just read the texas law. Adding red leds to your bumper would do the job. As they only need to be visible from 300'. You could take video of your ligjts from 300' to be in compliance on the ligjt output. The other issue is a red reflectore visible from 500' away. Simple as two pieces of reflective tape or reflectors attached to your bumper on each side.

A lot of times they will get on you having a red reflector, too. That's how many DOT taillights are registered. Even the tinted ones, if they are DOT approved, have an untinted reflector of some kind. I believe that is also a requirement of many state transportation laws too.

Also if those are nightshaded you can use gasoline to take the nightshade off easily unless they are clear coated then it's a bit harder

Are your stock tails tinted? I haven't had a problem so far with the CS cops and I've had plenty driving right behind me down university and Texas. But they're also LEDs tinted.

The only place that I found that advertises being street legal are the Recons. Though I don't know how seeing as to how they really aren't that bright, but they give you a form with them

The ones kevin posted are my favorites.....

I have had 2 sets on my truck. Matt (lb3711) has the first set now (tinted) and I have a chrome/clear set that we did in mineral gray.

Have I been pulled over? Yes. 1 time. Cop said he couldn't see my reflector, and that they were too dark. Ummmm......wrong. I had a set of tails with me (stock), swapped them in and showed him that mine were brighter than stock. And.....as for the reflector, no you aren't going to see that from 30ft away at 3PM in July on a sunny day. *********.......

Bottom line, I love 'em - and the tinted ones are HOT.

I'm not sure I understand the logic of requiring the need to see red plastic. Seems like as long as it lights up red when illuminated and meets necessary lumens then it should suffice. With that said, they should allow tinted tail lights but simply require a higher lumen bulb to replace the old bulb...likewise for headlights too.

Add a tailgate bar and swap with someone who has stockers for a day to get the ticket signed off, with a tailgate bar you should have no problems down the road when you put yours back on.
