Looking for a little help...

My 2013 Ram 1500 will sometimes start all on it's own. The horn honks twice and the engine starts without my having initiated the function from the fob.

Anyone else experience this?

Could this be a fob problem?

Thanks in advance.

From what I know about the Ram remote start systems it requires a command from the remote through the RF hub to initiate a remote start.

(I am operating on the assumption you’re using an OEM remote start and not an aftermarket remote start system.)

You could have something funky in the fob circuit board or button overlay on the remote. Take the fob(s) apart and examine the face of the circuitboard with the contacts and the disks on the backside of the button overlay. Make sure they’re clean. If the backside of the button overlay is damaged those overlays are easily replaced - look on Amazon.

If you don’t find anything obviously amiss you might want to try this next: let’s assume you have two fobs that have remote start. Remove the battery from one of them. If this odd remote start happens on a semi-regular basis and it still occurs, put the battery back in the first fob and remove it from the second one.

If either one of the battery takeouts makes the problem go away you’ve isolated the problem to the failed fob.

These are two very simple things you can get off the troubleshooting list to begin with. Good luck and let us know what you find.

Sorry to activate an old thread. I have just recently started having this issue. I walk out my house with the key in my pocket and my truck would suddenly start like an excited dog that heard "walkies"..
I'm a huge 80s Knight Rider fan, but this is quite freaky.

Another time, I just pressed the unlock button and it just unlocked and did the remote start at the same time. Never was able to do that. Remote start will not work if the truck is unlocked. But it did..

Now I'm wondering whether the truck will just suddenly start up and then over heat because its just idling there, or is there some kind of safety that allows will switch off the truck if there is no activity after a certain time period.

I am wondering if this has anything to do with the fact that I just replaced the battery in the fob recently. I did at a shop almost a month ago.. Can't think of anything else.

Pull the FOB apart and look on the back of the rubber keypad, There are metal disks glued to the back of the keys that come loose and walk around inside there. A drop a super glue back where they belong fixed mine

It will shut itself off after I "think" 15 minutes of running

I'm gonna have a take it apart and have a look. How common is this issue?
It's a common issue. When I got my 2009, the seller told me he took the batteries out of the fobs because he would find the windows open randomly. My truck doesn't have remote start but you can open the windows with the remote. I took them apart and found the discs floating around in there and a lot of grime. The circuit boards themselves were fine so I just bought new cases. This way you don't have to program them and everything is fine now.

Attached is a picture of one of my Fobiks. I taped the discs on to test that it was working otherwise before replacing the case.
