An distant friend of mine went out camper shopping. He has a 2500 diesel Ram. Sales guy sees his truck...and then points out this used 43ft long fifth wheel toy hauler, that was damaged in transit. Whats not to like he is thinking I am going to buy this rig. I talked to him and he sends me the stats on the fifth wheel. First thing I see is the pin weight is 2900lbs. I told him that is a great camper, if you had a 3500 truck. Being a newbie, he had no idea what he was getting into. Told him to send me photo of the sticker in the door jam. Listed 2093 as the max cargo capacity on his 2500.

I talked him out of buying that hauler.

Definitely does. I made that mistake once in the beginning too. Bought a 43' triple axle Coachmen toyhauler and towed it from Bowling Green, KY back to Huntsville with my 2012 2500. It was stupid and the most white knuckled I've ever been. I didn't tow it twice.

RV salesmen just need a sale. Half of them don't even understand payload. They just see Cummins and think it'll pull the space shuttle. The engine will.... the rest of the truck.... eh...

RV salesmen are ignorant slobs. RVs themselves are generally PsOS. Accept that and you can enjoy RV ownership as long as you are self reliant and handy at fixing things.

Have had mixed results with salespeople at trailer dealerships. My expectation would be that upon arriving would be to understand what the towing vehicle is. Then they can show the relevant models. But since every single one I have met over the years is commission, that never has happened. Fortunately my family always knows the values so we have never ended up with too much trailer.

But last addition to the family is a Class C. Family member went through all details with a lot of research but missed one thing, the payload of the vehicle (Ford E-350). Turns out that the max value minus the entire camper set up leaves enough for 3-4 people and no gear.

Now I see these units differently and shake my head when I see the big ones with a trailer in the back or maybe a rack with scooters, etc. Need to be just as careful with a motorhome for payload capacity.

Remember visiting some friends in Colorado Springs… we were talking RV’s and decided to go look at some. Upon arrival the salesperson asked me what I was driving; told him a 2016 Expedition EL. He immediately took me to a 40ft. fifth wheel!!! Huh?!?!

Well I kinda thought I could pull anything too , but I wanted light and easy to pull. Not for safety but because I was cheap and wanted mileage.
Anyways I luv my Cummins and I'm on 6th 5th wheel, but always check weights and clearances.
Also never ever trust a salesman, there trying to make money, do your on homework, and don't impulse buy, go home think about it. My 0.02
