Hey all,

I bought a new house back in January and like an idiot I didn’t check for clearance issues before trying to back my truck in the garage to do some work. I broke off the shark fin and had to have it replaced. The hole where it fit was bent slightly upward and I could see a crack on the edge. So I had it fixed almost immediately.

Stupid mistake but I figured that would be the end of it.

Fast forward to today when I see rusty looking paint cracks about an inch in length coming from underneath the shark fin.

Did I screw myself here? Is this an easy body shop fix or will this always be a problem with this roof? Dealer told me to replace the roof, but I know they’re usually overkill on these things.

I have 2016 Ram 1500 Sport.

I would take it to a body shop, at least let them tell you what they think. If the roof gets replaced, you are going to have more areas disturbed, I would be more concerned about that.

What do you mean when you say more areas will be disturbed? What kind of problems would I see?

Seems to me if they replace the whole roof, there will be seams at the top of the A pillar, the windshield will have to come out, seams across the top of the doors on both sides, and across the back window, which will also have to come out. That is a lot of things to disturb. and multiple welds. All places where things can go wrong.

Have the body shop straighten out that square hole in the roof that mounts the antenna, if they replace the roof skin you will possibly have other leaks, where the roof joins the body.

A good body shop should be able to replace the roof skin without it leaking.

A good body man caN cut a square out around it and just replace the effected area that is dented /cracked.. No leaks, and after painted you shouldn't be able to tell how he did it, or that anything was done at all
