Some of you may have read how I just dropped almost $2,000 just a few weeks back on my truck due to a blown engine. Well, all's been well, until today. My check engine light came on. Which normally I know can be a variety of things, some minor, but right away I get a knot in my stomach because of what I just went through. Needless to say, I'll be headed up to the shop first thing in the morning. I'll let y'all know the verdict. It feels like it's running the same, but who knows.

Nope. If I can make it up to Autozone in town today I could have them do it. Wish I had the reader thing to do it myself......

Put the key in, then put it to on, off, on, off, on, off. I think you have to do it within like 10 sec or something and you might get a code, worth a shot

Doesnt it only work if it has a digital odometer? Thought the 2nd gens had the analog odometer.

I have to agree. I have a 98 with a digital odo. Old cluster was analog i believe. So 98 and up has digital. I thought have been unsuccessful in getting the key trick to work.

Well, jus got back from the shop. He plugged in his handheld reader, and told me that it cleared the code, and he said if it comes on again to bring it up there and he'll hook it up to his big machine.

If you have an android phone you can use the Torque app to clear CEL's...the adapter off of eBay is less than $50...at the very least it gives you the code to lookup...

^^ the torque app works great! The dongle was like 15 bux when I ordered my on eBay. It's an elm 327 I think is the number. And the torque app being free that's an inexpensive code reader and there's usually a web search for fault codes that even points you in a general direction of what you need to do to go about fixin it!

Did your shop tell you what code was being thrown by chance?

No, he just said that when he hooked the reader up to it, it cleared the code. Didn't say what code it was.....

I was only paranoid about it since they just did alllll that work on the engine. :/

To get the codes, start with the key off, then do on, off, on, off, on. When its in the run position on the third time, wait... The check engine light will start to flash a two digit code. If everything is good with no codes or it is done reading the code, it will flash 5 times, pause and 5 times. 55 is the all done code.
