Hi Guys, I am looking for help I am wanting to modify if possible the OEM smart alternator to make it a dumb alternator as I am having a dual battery system installed, is it possible to change a voltage regulator or something to make the alternator charge the second battery instead of buying a CTEK dual battery charger to overcome the new alternator way of charging.
As far as I can tell the smart alternator is only for better fuel and emissions control at the lab so they can put the little sticker on the windscreen of the new truck to make everyone feel good

Thanks in advance

Smart alternator? Can’t you just put a lead from your existing battery to the new battery? Edit: just looked up how the smart alternators work. Was not aware of that. Hmm. I can’t help with that

Hi Guys, The Smart part of the alternator only charges after you start the car and may only charge for a period of time eg. 15 minutes, (it is the same on all new cars, trucks, buses, semi's) I am running a 12v fridge and lights off the second battery and there is a electronic switch between the 2 batteries that once the starter battery is fully charged it will then switch to the second battery so if you are stationary for a long period of time the second battery won't drain the starter battery, the smart alternator will then may only run at 9v and the CTECK charger system can detect the low voltage input and boost it up to 13.5v to charge the second battery.
I hope this makes sense

Sounds like you got it figured out. I also had never heard of a smart alternator. Thanks for posting your solution!

What makes them smart is the ability to be controlled by duty cycle. So they can run at a full capacity or a reduced capacity based on battery state of charge as well as vehicle load.

The alternator doesn’t do it by itself though. The PCM is what controls the duty cycle of the alternator.

You could probably install an external voltage regulator and a non duty cycle alternator. It would likely turn on a CEL though.

why wouldnt you just run the batteries in parallel? still get 12v but double the cranking amps. you will be just charging a lot bigger battery source. if your looking to run accessories and not kill your main battery i would just use a selector switch like on a boat.
