Hey everyone, sold my radio on eBay, guy who bought it wants my VIN number off my truck. I’m sure it’s probbaly ok, just wanted to make sure it’s safe to give out your VIN. Is that needed for the new radio?

Theoretically someone can look up your name and address based on the VIN number if they know where and how to look, but that falls under the category of "you should have thought about that before you sold your radio on ebay" because without that VIN number, the radio is worthless to him.

unless you have the radio code.. you probably should get it from your dealer and give it to him if you don't have that info in your owner's manual somewhere..

Yep probably needs it for the radio code. It’s fine hell he bought something off if he wanted too he could request a refund and ship your item back and bam... he has your address and name then lol.

I agree. I doubt he is a after anything dishonest. He probanly just needs to unlock the radio. If you don't feel comfortable giving him your vin# for the unlock code you can call your dealer and get it for him if you chose. He can use any vin# from a truck with the same radio as yours for the firmware updates. I usually find a truck for sale on ebay with the correct year and radio and just use its vin#.

I don't think a VIN number is something that really needs to be kept secret. Hell, you can walk up to any vehicle and read it off the dash. It's even printed on the windshield registration sticker in NY.

He also needs the vin so if he needs to update the radio later he can with it. It's pretty common thing to ask for when buying a used radio.

Give him a vin of another truck with the exact same year, model and radio option. Done.

MY radio must of been switched by the previous owner I guess. Sirius/xm said the radio ID didnt match my VIN so I could not take advantage of the free six months subscription. I was offered the opportunity to go back to the place I bought it 2hrs away to have them fix it . Was not worth it to me. As far as the VIN number if you notice most of the Autotrader and Trucktrader publications all list the vin numbers in all their adds and look where the manufacturers put it on the vehicle , any one can see it from the outside . Some state inspection stickers had it on them which is also on the windshield open to anyones eyes.

That won't work, he needs the VIN to obtain the radio's unlock code. they're unique to each vehicle.

There’s sites all over the net you can get an unlock code with nothing but the radios serial. :headbang:

Its just like when someone puts a pic of a car for sale and they "blotch" out the plates... duh you drive around with them every day whats the difference...
