Stellantis unit announces $4.2 million settlement for California emissions probe

1 min read

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) confirmed that Stellantis' (NYSE:STLA) FCA US unit will pay ~$4.2 million to resolve a California investigation into excess emissions.

This settlement addresses violations related to specific models of the Ram ProMaster vehicles, specifically those manufactured between 2014 and 2016 that are equipped with 3.0L diesel engines.

The investigation revealed that the engines showed different emissions control behavior during operation versus testing, which resulted nearly 55 tons of excess nitrogen oxides releasing into the atmosphere.

As part of the settlement, Stellantis (STLA) will conduct a recall of the affected vehicles and modify their emission control systems to ensure compliance.

The financial breakdown of the settlement includes a civil penalty exceeding $2 million, which will be allocated to California's Air Pollution Control Fund, and ~$2.1 million designated for a Supplemental Environmental Project aimed at reducing emissions from marine vessels.

"CARB’s robust compliance testing ensures that auto manufacturers sell the exact vehicles that received certification for sale within California, without alterations made to skirt the state’s regulations and release excess emissions that harm air quality and public health,” said CARB Executive Officer Dr. Steven Cliff.
