Some interesting responses in here... I've never had the opportunity to run the stock HPs as I've never had them on a truck... I do however have considerable winter driving experience..
- I live in Northern Alberta (Fort McMurray) where the winters are long, and cold
- I've owned a Ram 1500 and currently a 3500
The stock Goodyear SRAs from my 1500 couldn't stick to glue if you tried, they were terrible. I ran Toyo OpenCountry ATs on my 1500 as all seasons through the winter, they performed well, never really had an issue. I got my 3500 with BFG ATs on it. My first winter with the truck, I was not allowed to drive due to a medical issue, so my wife insisted on winter tires. I had never bought winter tires before, but figured, its a big truck, she's not comfortable driving it, may as well. We went with Cooper winter tires, cannot recall the model right now.
I had the opportunity to drive the truck periodically during my prohibition and was amazed at the traction. I thought my Open Country tires on my 1500 were good, these were amazing. She drove the 3500 through 2.5 ft of snow down highway 63 heading to BC for Christmas. She couldn't see the road but between her and me in the passenger seat, we kept it on the ashfalt and she made the 4 hour drive without losing control once.
The following winter, I put the coopers on again and drove all winter with 100% confidence that I could stop/accelerate or swerve if needed and I had good traction. Yes, 4x4 was left on most of the winter, but when you have roads like we do, it's a given.
Currently I'm in Calgary, caught in a snow storm with my Nitto TerraGrapplers on and they are performing well, similar to the Toyo O/Cs. We do however have a tire-change appointment on tuesday to get them switched to the coopers.
So... the point of this? Winters are totally worth it.... as good as you think your AT/All season/whatever are, winters will chew them up and spit them on the ground for you. The only thing I still need to do is buy some new 17" rims for my summer tires and it'll take the pain out of changing the tires every winter/spring.
