The truck:
2004 Ram 1500 4wd 545RFE 3.92
The problem:
1. LSD clutches are long looong gone. Has been a one wheel wonder for quite awhile.
2. Recent long range trip towing, now has the rear diff whining and lightly howling.
3. I use this truck as a truck. I need the traction of all wheels pulling their share. A 4wd working truck should not be propelled by only one of four tires!
The fixes
1. Rear differential master bearing overhaul kit… likely the Yukon kit, to refresher the spinners.
2. Carrier rebuild to oem (new clutches) OR whole new carrier swap, to get this thing properly driving and motivating like it should.
My use case is
- winter; mainly daily driver commute through snow ice gravel and shiny pavement. Some towing of toy trailer loaded with snowmobiles or ice fishing hit and gear
- summer; frequent towing and hauling of fairly heavy loaded deck trailer. Pavement gravel loose dirt (fields) morning dew wet grass
Trying to decide what option to consider. Google pops up to me the Yukon Duragrip and the Detroit TrueTrac, but nothing about just rebuilding the original TracLok LSD.
The Yukon Duragrip clutched LSD is ballparking at 540$
The TrueTrac helical LSD is ballparking at 1250$
Any other options to consider? Something called a Powertrax
pops up too but nowhere to be sourced/bought.
What would you do for this use case? Open to comments and suggestions.
I will be doing the repair/replace work myself.
