Part 2:
Cylinder 8:
Popped the valve covers off this morning.#8 exhaust valve not moving - yep, I got that pushrod in the wrong hole. Took out the rod and it is slightly bent. So need new pushrod there. Then it ocurred to me the valve may also be bent so did a compression test and it came in at 220. Then did a leakdown and it held pressure - so no need to pull the right head! Yea, at least something went right.

Cylinder 5:
Popped the valve covers off and all valves moving as they should. Looked again using the borescope to try and find anything left in there - the intake valve is clear of all debris but I cannot see the exhaust. So, I brought it around to the cylinder 5 valve overlap and I lit a small fire in the cylinder to try and burn up any left over piece of paper towel. Still only has 25 Lbs of compression. That head has to come off and probably the valves replaced on cylinder 5..

Parts on order, I am taking abreak. We have a hurricane coming and I did not want the motor opened up for several days. I will wait till I get parts and the hurricane passses then dive back in.

At least it is only 1 head.
Sucks You gotta pull the head and do more, but maybe considering you lucked out. AND wateva U do, do not feel stupid. I am no big master mechanic, but have had my share of intakes and such off of 327, 350 and big 396's and 383's. We were working on a friends truck one day, putting on a "rebuilt" by us PS pump for a F 150. For some reason, that sucker just would not align up 100%. You remember the dual mounting and angled off brackets that Ford used forever. ANYWAY, after pulling, putting back on and trying to realign to include using the universal Bolt/Part aligner (hammer), we were both just PO. Anyway, my friend, and it was his truck had the universal tool in his hand. He was soooo mad, he cursed out the truck and THREW the hammer. Unfortunately, CRASH, there went the front windshield. AND that is just one example.

I can tell you horror stories, another good one being under a slant back AM General (Hummer), on top of a mountain, in the middle of Germany, 30 F, during a Major Exercise, trying to pull a bunch of parts due (shields, cross member brackets, pan shields, etc), to a jammed flywheel. All I had was my lil tool box with regular assortment of tools, no breaker bars, no TQ wrench, just general stuff and a can of ATF. But that is a story for another day, lmao. (And FTR, I was not a 63W anything (Army mechanic MOS numbers), just Squad Leader with a broke a z z Hum Vee). Added: for the military, it was a M-1026.

DA BOIRD

CAVEAT: even the color (cammo) scheme here is correct, we were in Europe at the time before the Fall of the "Wall". Not my particular assigned, just general pic for the uninformed, non-military people in the Forum. But I do not remember my Hummer looking that pretty, roflmao.

Thanks man! I am over it. Stuff happens. I've been around engines and cars since high school. Did a full fram off restoration of a 1970 GTO Judge 25 years ago. Eventually sold that car (should have kept it). My point is I am not foreign to engine assembly. It was a simple oversight by a tired old guy trying to get his truck back together.

At least it is only one head. I got 200+ PSI in all the other cylinders. I have a spring compressor left over from back in the day.

I think a good topic/thread here on the forums would be "Stupid Mistakes I have Made", maybe a sticky! Would be fun reading.

I'll pull the head, lap the two valves and pop it back on. I can do that in a day along with getting the intake back on. Probably have it running on Saturday. Going to rain through tomorrow so time for a break.

Thanks for your service BTW! Electronics Tech here, NAVY 1977-81.

How many times have you had the head bolts out and re-torqued on that side, you can usually get away with reusing/re-torquing them once, but i'm not sure i'd push my luck if they've had more then 1 re-torque already.

WILDs got a good idea ref them head bolts. Them puppies stretch when retorqued. Maybe new ones just to be safe. Now back in the early 70's when playing with chevys we always reused, just kids we had no money and used a chitload of Permatex on top of scraped cork, lmao.

How many remember them old orange colored cork gaskets, man we scraped, peeled and reused as much as we could. Permatex was a lot cheaper than gasket set, hee hee,.

Except for the tin cookie sheet on the old 383's, now "Dodge" had a good idea there.

Anyone ever used Indian Heal Gasket Shellac?

Getting that off is like chipping epoxy.

I never use RTV if I can get a gasket. I always use Indian Head Shellac on all paper gaskets. My water pump gaskets and differential gaskets all come out practically whole without breaking. I have GM gov-locs on some HD trucks and service differentials every 30K. Not a lot of scraping and a little mineral spirits and the surface is clean and ready for a new gasket.

Finished everything this morning. It started right up. Cold oil pressure at ~ 60 Lbs with that Melling HV pump and 5W-30 Mobil1 oil. Lifter tick immediately went away in less than a minute, although I did pre-primt the system with 2 quarts.

Took it for a test drive and she is running like a new Swiss watch. No error codes, no check engine light.

Thanks for everyones time and comments and suggestions. I am just glad it is done!

If/when I do my cam swap, I'm gonna tie a little tag to the top of the intake that says: REMOVE shop towels!
