Hello new here - here's my question - why does my tailgate lock itself when I close it ?? Thanks for any help

The tailgate should lock/unlock with the cab doors. If it's locking on it's own without the doors locking then there's a problem with the linkage.
If it is locking itself, you have the exact opposite of a problem a bunch of these tailgates suffered which was opening by itself. The problem was caused by the power lock actuator over traveling and unlatching the tailgate.

Thanks I'll pull.the inner cover off and check / lube the linkage - this is some weird ****

Found broken round tension spring that keeps plastic arm open when closing gate - too much hassle to fix so just live with it n try not to slam tailgate when closing
