Hey guys, have been on a quest to boost MPG's in my 2012 Hemi Ram Big Horn since I bought it a few weeks ago.

There isn't a whole lot of info out there, but I have visited the hypermiling websites that talk about how guys with cummins get crazy mpgs out of their rigs. This includes info on how to drive to maximize mpgs.

I have been following that advice as well as doing a few mods on the truck that I thought might increase MPG regardless of manufacturer claims etc.

Heres the list.

K&N CAI - Model 63-1561
Edge Evo HT 36030 Tuner - Program Level "Race" (91 Octane Tune)
Nitrogen Filled Tires all four corners set at 40 PSI
91 Octane Fuel that contains NO Ethanol.

Thats it.

Drive it like a grandma, and she sips the gas nice and easy.

Stomp on the pedal and well, any MPGS you gained over the last week are gone in a matter of seconds, but if driven nicely these trucks CAN get GREAT mileage.

Here is a link to a youtube video I posted of my truck's average mpg on the hwy at about 50 mph.

https://youtu.be/dhnUUjCwryk

34mpg US or 41mpg CDN ( our gallons are bigger here dont ask why cause I dont know )

Not bad.

Future mods planned.

- Full Synthetic Oil Change
- Full Synthetic Diff Fluid Change

I have heard synthetic fluids can improve MPGS, has anyone experienced better mileage with a simple fluid change?

I will try and make another video after the fluid changes to see if I can squeeze another couple miles out of a tank.

Meh, anyone who bought a 5.7 hemi and is going for "great" mpg's should rethink the vehicle they bought.

These things do great... when they're moving.

Around the city, absolutely brutal... and that's ok. It's a V8 truck.

Oh trust me, it doesnt get driven like a grandma much, but on the highway going with the flow of traffic, its great to know I can get better mileage and lower my operating costs. That way once I get into town driving in rocket ship mode fuel consumption is offset by what I have been saving on the highway.

Trust me those mods do offer quite a kick in the old butt dyno when its time to play around.

25.3 mpg US average over a 200+ mile stretch of highway last weekend.

I've gotten as high as 29 US during 40 mile trips on the Beltway.

100% OEM on 87 w/ethy.

Maybe not quite as much 'fun' as others, (?) but the return on 'zero additional investment' is pretty good. :)

So what like 82 kmh on cruise?

I'd like to see hand calculated numbers to back up the evic. That's crazy good though

LOL 82km/h not sure, was just cruising with traffic during the video, posted speed limit was 80km/h and is that speed all the way to and from work. I was running on a major highway the other night cruising at 120km/h and was still getting 8l/100km which equates to about 29 mpg /US or 35 mpg /CDN

Still a vast improvement over stock. When I bought it I was getting about 10.8-11.5 litres per 100k on the highway which is exactly what the dealership claims they get at best.

So overall happy to say the least.

On a side note, jamming the gas pedal to the floor for a fun run in the country netted me a whopping 21litres per 100km which is about 11mpg /US and 13mpg /CDN but that was WOT for a good distance, stopping, turning around and WOT again repeatedly. (Had to test out the race tune for performance of course)

I run 89. Pretty sure the book even calls for it.

NOPE.....books says 87 - 89, and recommends 89, but 87 is allowed

5.7L Engine
This engine is designed to meet all emissions
regulations and provide satisfactory
fuel economy and performance when using
high quality unleaded gasoline having
an octane range of 87 to 89. The manufacturer
recommends the use of 89 octane for
optimum performance. The use of premium gasoline is
not recommended, as it will not provide any benefit over
regular gasoline in these engines.

And the chart in the back of the book shows.....

Fuel Selection – 5.7L Engine 87 Octane Acceptable - 89 Octane Recommended

So you say NOPE, and then post that it does recommend it. Wtf.

You said 'calls for it', which to most means required.....big difference between required and recommended.

That's WTF.........and that's what I was pointing out
