Now that I've retired and we downsized from a 15 acre working farm to a smaller house on 1 acre, my 2500 is starting to seem like overkill for the way I use it. With used car prices reportedly being high right now, I'm thinking if I can get close to $28K for my current truck, that puts me within range of ordering a '21 RAM Classic Tradesman 4x4 that will get better mileage, ride smoother and sit lower to the ground. I'm no longer hauling heavy loads, so the reduced payload isn't an issue.

KBB says upper end for my '15 2500 standard cab longbed Tradesman (63K miles) is $24K, but I've dressed it up and it has a gooseneck hitch, front receiver and front camera, aftermarket CarPlay head unit, wheels & almost-new tires). I'm hoping a private party sale might net enough over that to put me in range of the new truck (I need the gap to be around $8K so I can pay cash).

Anyone have any recent experiences selling their 5-6 year-old truck? How did you do on price?

I would do 2 things, put it in the market for a couple grand over what you want for it, and check the trade in value. You might get a nice surprise! I like your truck but I may be a little biased.

Try it. Used prices are crazy right now. If you're on Facebook, try marketplace. My kids sold their 2007 Jeep in one day for $500 less than they paid for it 2 years ago. Ask what you want plus $1000/1500. Nothing to loose. Be firm, because people will come out of the woodwork. They even had dealers wanting to buy the Jeep.

I submitted my details to a couple car buying services, and the highest offer I got was $26K, which is above KBB. But I think I will likely do what y'all are suggesting and list it on CL and see what happens. I don't do FB (they'd boot me off anyway). I think eBay Motors might be free these days - will have to check. Should finish detailing the truck today or tomorrow.

I'm finding it difficult to get dealers to quote a new truck, unfortunately. They're doing MY changeover early this year, and pricing for the 2022MY isn't published yet for the Classics.

Right now FB is the hottest marketplace going. If you don't use it, maybe a friend might list it for you. Good luck with the sale.

Just an update that I found a buyer for my truck (deposit sent, working out details for them to fly in and drive it home). Listed on eBay ($95), and sold for $27,500, which was just off my target price and well above the trade-in offers I was getting from dealers as well as the offer from Vroom. CarFax estimated a private party sale value of $27,750 for reference.

I've already ordered a new RAM Classic (DS) Tradesman 4x4 Quad Cab 6'4", which will likely take 10-14 weeks to get built and delivered. Not sure if it will be a '21 or '22 - should know once I get the VIN, hopefully in a few days [edit: it's a '21]. I'll put in a plug for Aaron at Mark Dodge in LA, who was excellent to work with and welcomes working with forum folks. I got right at 10% off MSRP, which was far better than any other dealer offered.
