What does the tow button on the console of the 2014 ram do ?

I have the towing package in the truck with the trailer brake controller

Do you mean the tow/haul button? If so, it puts the transmission into tow/haul mode. There should be details in your owner's manual.

Exactly what NYCruiser said. Changed shifting points on your
Transmission.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but to sum up what the button does, it just makes it stay in the gear longer. I have a 6speed and normally I hear it shift a lot to get better mpg. When I use tow/haulmode, it stays on the gear longer before it shifts.

Correct, you hold gears longer to keep it in higher rpm to save the transmission while towing.

It does other stuff too. Like disables 6th gear and affects when the torque converter locks up. Don't have to be towing to use it. Good for when you want a little more performance from the truck.

From the owner's manual:

When to Use TOW/HAUL Mode
When driving in hilly areas, towing a trailer, carrying a
heavy load, etc., and frequent transmission shifting occurs,
press the TOW/HAUL switch to activate TOW/
HAUL mode. This will improve performance and reduce
the potential for transmission overheating or failure due
to excessive shifting.

It will cost some MPG's though. Especially on the highway because you will be running in 5th gear. (Both 5th & 6th gears are actually overdrive ratios, but 6th is obviously higher)

Didn't I see somewhere on here that it keeps the MDS from kicking in, as well?

I use this when i need an extra bit of ooomph. Use it often, actually. Really wakes the truck up, honestly.

The MDS is still active in tow/haul, just not as commonly used. The tow/haul also allows the engine to downshift when braking for some additional engine braking.
