Hello, I have a 2014 ram Laramie and I put my hand on the door handle, it doesn’t open the vehicle. I opened it with the key fob but when I push the start button, I get key fob not detected message and the ignition doesn’t change to on or run. This happens with the spare fob as well.
Anyone have any ideas on what is failing?

probably an issue with the RF Hub. Can you start the truck by pushing the button in with the fob?

I tried that but still get key fob not detected

Check your rear floorboard area for water. Especially in the bottom of the the storage areas.

You should probably pull the rear seats, remove the rear bulkhead cover and check the RF hub for water damage.

The 3rd brake light and rear window are both directly above the RF hub, and famous for leaking water into the electronics.

Any recent rain or carwash activity?

Pull the negative battery cable for a few minutes. How old is the battery? Check the voltage with a volt meter, if you have one, or even take the boat to a local parts store and have it load tested. Low voltage with these trucks can cause strange things to happen.

Ok, the hub looks fine, no sign of water damage from what I can tell

I also pulled the negative battery lead and I’m giving it 30 minutes and also checking the voltage on the battery

Just a possibility, but have you changed the battery in the fobs? Perhaps the spare fob sit in a drawer for years and the battery died, and when the battery in the one you actually use went dead, you went and tried the one with a years old dead battery in it? Just a thought.

Also

If you have AlfaOBD, it can scan the rf hub for any codes. Also, itt can activate the RF hub and read any proximity keys nearby. Put both your keys in the truck, fire up Alfa and see if it can detect them:

It's pretty improbable for both fobs to **** the bed at the same time. So check the batteries.

To test them,
Most any TPMS sensor programmer can read the key fob radio frequency. I have an ATEQ VT37 and a ThinkTPMS scan tool, and both can receive key fob signals and tell you what the signal strength is.

If you have a Discount Tire or Les Schwab, ask if they'll scan your fobs to see if they are transmitting. They use the ATEQ vt37, if I remember right

What are the odds of having a bad fob, the spare with a dead battery and the car battery low.
I originally replaced the battery on the fob I use daily and didn’t notice the chip on the board was unglued on one side not making contact. I noticed this when opened it again to check the battery. Grabbed the spare fob again and the battery was dead on it so thanks for mentioning that.
Replaced the battery on the spare and it’s now working fine. Thanks everyone for your input on this.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to replace the broken fob and reprogramming it.

The aforementioned AlfaOBD can handle this for your 2014.

Order a OBD Link MX+ on Amazon and download AlfaOBD from the Google Play store.

On your 2014, programming key fobs is easy.

The big upside to this is that you'll still have AlfaOBD afterwards, and it is infinitely useful.

For the fob, order OEM from whichever retailer has the best deal. I've had good luck with MoparPartsGiant.

Checking the batteries was the forethought that came to my mind. Specially with the spare also not responding. Glad you got this handled and for a very small cost

Even with a totally dead battery, of no signal from the RF hub, the truck should start if you use the fob to push the start button.
My 2014 will and I lose signal about 1-2 times a year, but I can still start the truck.
Just make sure you have the key in the fob with you to unlock the door.

Mine will always start working again next time I use it , so have never done anything about it. the truck is always in the garage , so no water leaks.
