I think they were referring to the Light-duty 1500. I have the HD 3/4 ton, so I think mine is 6-speed (unless Im mistaken)?

The article had both the 65rfe which is the 1/2 ton "6" speed and the 66rfe which is behind the 3/4 ton gas motors.

Actually they all started life as a 4 speed.

But yes the the 5/6 speed is the same transmission.

Tow/haul does make the truck a beast especially when slowing down to stop. The flows just gargle and pop. Sounds pretty nasty actually.

It's a 4. How they ever got away with calling it a 5 or 6, was sly on their part.

Either way, in tow/haul mode it doesn't use the top overdrive gear so you'll notice higher RPM's on the highway and reduced MPG.

that cant be good for the transmission in the long run though..its just causing more stress and wear, i dont think its intended to be used for normal driving in any way

completely false. increased line pressure and firmer shifts are better. the average person would rather have a smooth shifting car though, and not feel each gear.

You do realize the 6 speed is a 5 speed anyways right?

not in tow haul mode

I wasn't referring to tow haul mode. I can't say I ever drove a 65rfe truck to tow haul mode to see what it does. I know with my 8 speed it used all 8 gears in tow haul, so does my 6.4 2500.

Tow haul uses all 8 and even MDS in my 8spd 2014.

However if I hit the down shift button and then set it to 8th, I've noticed that the truck with shift up and down like normal, but not go into MDS.

in tow haul mode it uses all 6 forward gears. 3rd is almost pointless when your not loaded (this can be seen by manually selecting gears), hence the point for skipping it when not in tow haul mode.

My 5 speed DOES still go into top OD gear with tow/haul on. It just takes a little longer. Take it up to 60 and watch. It turns the crappy MDS off as well. I am always in tow/haul unless I am on a long highway roadtrip somewhere.

My six speed doesn't. Owners manual says it's not supposed to tho. 5 & 6 are both overdrives on the six speed version. 4th is 1:1. So it just disables the top OD. If I'm on the highway at 70 and push tow/haul it will shift down to 5.

The earlier 5 speed versions are obviously different.
