I might have to bite the bullet and upgrade to the 6.4. My wife refuses to drive a diesel so.....
And she hates the idea of fitting 3 kids in an extended cab with no 3rd door. So maybe by this time next year I'll be searching for a half ton 8-speed.

I'm not sure if I'm following you, but currently the 6.4l is not offered in a half ton.

Two different thought processes there. I wanna keep the 3/4 for towing so upgrade to the 6.4. But on the other hand if you guys are getting such good economy out of your half tons with 8-speeds with the 5.7 then maybe that's the way to go.

With the 6.4L I have gotten as high as 18.5 but now that is the evic, and on the highway it's about 17.8 you don't lose much when I do the highway but only in the city it seem like it's 1-2 less.

I was seeing that with my 2011 1500 when I had it, so I'm really not losing much over the 1500 that I had but the 6.4L give me 3,300 of payload and 15,650 of towing and was getting about the same with my 1500.

Now I don't know about what's the new 1500 getting but for towing my 36".9' TT weighting about 9500 lbs I'm happy.

That's what I would like to see out of a 3/4. I have a year to figure out if I want the 5.7 in a half ton vs the 6.4 in a 3/4. For what I want it for, and how my family is growing, I think I wanna keep the 3/4 ton theme going.

I found out I have 4.10 gears by the way. Found the build sheet online!

So the question whether a gear swap(and what ratio) I should go to or do I try to make the best out of what I have?
The truck will be in the family for 10+ years if I don't upgrade next year so putting money into trying to improve fuel economy isn't the worst thing I can do. Plus if I start bolting on goodies I get a better sounding truck with more power and improved fuel economy. But I'm getting ahead of myself. If a gear swap wil lget me what I want then I'll do that before any bolt ons.

What do you guys think?

If you already have 4.10 gears and stock tires you won't want to go any lower gearing. If you went to 4.56 your mileage may actually suffer as the rpms will be higher at every speed.
I had a half ton 3.92 with the 8 speed and they are impressive. Only reason I got rid of it was the camper and weight behind it were starting to push the truck around. Had plenty of power.
And my last point for now, you said your truck will sound better with the mods? Yes it sure will and that means you push on the skinny pedal more frequently and harder which negates any mileage gains you would see. That being said, you're damn right I put exhaust on every truck I get. I do it for the sound. Any other benefits are simply icing on the cake.
If your wife drives that truck all the time, I would recommend saving the mod money for a down payment on a new truck. You won't improve mileage much with any of those mods.

She gave me the go ahead to start shopping for a 6.4. Mighta been the fact that I finally married her yesterday! Today was the first day looking. So far I'm looking at about 10k upgrade to 3-4 years newer with exactly the same options. 100,000kms less and a 6.4.
