hey guys I’m buying a new trailer but I need a brake controller, my 2019 Ram express crew didn’t come with one. I’d like the oem one but they want $500 for it. What aftermarket brands are the best

Or should I just go oem?

OEM can be bought for $155 and install is not bad. Dealer can flash it probably under $100. I paid $80 for our local dealer to set it up.

$500 seems way too high for an OEM TBC unless the 5th gen are really different. You need to flash the truck or get alpha and do it yourself.

I have had both a Tekonsha P3 and the OEM in my 2016 2500 CTD. The OEM did not put out enough current / voltage for one of my trailers to provide enough stopping power. I had to install the P3 to get enough current /voltage for that trailer. The new trailer works very well with the stock controller. I did find the P3 was finicky with the new trailer to find the right adjustment to keep the trailer from over-applying the brakes which stops a bit jerky. The OEM one with the new trailer provides very smooth stops.

Also had Tekonsha on a truck and a van, both worked very well. Hitch installer did it but don't remember price. Wasn't high enough that I kept it in my head as a bad memory.

Try Ebay for the controller... I don't know what options you have in Canada but I'd at least check there. Amazon was quite a bit more when I ordered mine.

you could try car-part.com
search under computer box not engine.

Works in Canada, or US wreckers may ship to Canada or if you are close to the border maybe a fellow member could help you out and meet at the border.

There is a used one off of a 2019 for $100 @ http://flowersautowreckers.com/inventory/main-search/

A dealer in Ohio sells them new or new takeoff (?) for $155.

I bought this one and put in myself. Programmed with alfaOBD. Extremely happy with it. Pull two different trailers with it. It keeps a trip odometer for each, integrates the traction control and has away control in it somehow too. And the plus of not having a box in the way to hit your knee on every time you get in or out of the truck.

I'm going through this same thing right now. Thinking about getting a camper. Obstacle: I won't patronize the service department at the local Dodge dealership (you wouldn't believe the story), so I called the Dodge dealership 50 miles down the road... They quoted me two options. Aftermarket brake controller for $180 installed, or OEM controller installed for $375.

Not sure which I'm gonna do.

Is that what you have? What was the install and setup like?

No mine came with the factory setup, wife works for a trailer dealer and they install these sometimes. Real clean setup, doesn't seem too involved to install.
