My ‘99 2500 gas Magnum V8 truck, automatic transmission, regular cab, steel flatbed, transmission gets hot after driving a while when I haul a horse trailer up grades (not even very steep grades), otherwise does fine when hauling. I want to put a better tranny cooler on it, it has one but it looks small. Should I have one put on with a fan or without a fan? Currently has no fan on the cooler. Current cooler is mounted on front of the A/C condenser. I’m not a mechanic so need some advice as to what to buy.

Cheers,
Cheri

I have been having similar issues while pulling my camper. The fan clutch was bad. The fan clutch has a viscus jel inside which thickens when hot and makes the fan turn faster. The clutch is not expensive, but tricky to replace without damaging the radiator.

I replaced the transmission cooler as well since it had lots of road damage. There are lots of transmission cooling kits on the aftermarket, but a knowledgeble friend recommended not re-engineering the truck until I had fixed what was broken.

I also purchased an EDGE monitor so that I can see actual transmission temps instead of waiting for the idiot light.

I have not been to the mountains since the repair. Wish me luck.
