Got stuck in a traffic jam the other day and my trans temp climbed above 160... under normal running it stays between 140-150. That didn't seem alarmingly high to me, but it was enough to make my BullyDog tuner start chirping a warning. Got me to thinking...

What's the normal trans temp range for these trucks?

My 2500 with a 6sp runs168-170 all the time, towing or not. Do you have a 6 or 8sp?

You must have the 6 speed , because normal for the 8speeds are about 190° .

Normal for the 6 speeds are around 140° -150° with factory fluid & pan in a 1500Ram from what I've seen .
Your fine at 160° imo [emoji1303]

Ronnie knows his **** about that 6sp in the 1500s. If he says you are good, I wouldn’t worry!

Thank you gentlemen.

I've not had this truck on any long trips yet, and most of my driving is on rural back roads at off-peak hours... so this was the first time I've ever sat in traffic for more than just a few minutes.

I wasn't overly concerned, more curious than anything. This BullyDog tuner is nice, but it can be finicky at times.

Another example is that it loves to give a warning chirp if the coolant temp stays above 210 for more than about 30 seconds, and that has happened a few times to me this summer. If the truck has been sitting for a while and I hop in to run to the corner store it won't reach operating temp before I get to the store... and then the already warm coolant will sit in the engine for 10-15 mins while I conduct my business. So when I fire the truck up to head back home that hot coolant has a chance to circulate through and temp will reach 210 for about 30 seconds before the fans kick in and bring it back down. I've been pondering switching to a 180 degree thermostat so it will open and allow coolant to circulate a bit sooner for those short runs.

My 2015 QC1500 with 8 speed usually runs trans temp in the 170s. Only hits 190s when uphill towing.

The 6 speeds in the 2013's will run higher then that, they usually run in the 175/180 range. The 2013's were the first year of the thermal management system, and therefore are equipped with a transmission thermostat, that maintains a higher temp then the older 5/6 speeds did prior to that.If you have a 2013 with the 6 speed look through the grill, and if you have an aluminium block with bigger lines running to it,and the numbers 55111005AC stamped on it,you have the thermostatically controlled 6 speed

I took it out of my old 13,think I still got it laying around somewhere, lol.I just used tranny cooler line to splice the lines together ,it's been a few years since I owned my old 13,but it wasn't that hard to remove it if I remember right.

If you look through the grill you'll see the block if your truck has it,you don't have to look under the truck, just through the grill or down from the top by the rad.I'm not sure all 2013+ 6 speed trucks have it,as the ones equipped with the tow package might not have the thermostat. It's pretty easy to spot the block,as it's a couple inches square in size and there's a couple bigger hard lines running to it.I do have the one I removed from my 13,i can post a pic of it,but it'll have to be on one of the more common Ram facebook pages.I've never had any luck getting pic's on here.So if you want to see what it looks like, pick one of the ram pages, like Tuned Rams / Greene Pages / Nadodge /4th Gen Rams etc. and i'll get a pic of the block posted for you.

Look closer ,if you have a square aluminium block, that's the thermostat. There's no aluminium block for the AC lines. The transmission cooler is also part of the AC condenser, and the lines into the tranny thermostat are virtually identical to look at, as the AC lines.Do the lines out of the block go into the top of the AC condenser, that's where the tranny cooler is located,it's the top part of the condenser.I'd lay odds you have the tranny thermostat.

I'll try my best to describe it,seeing as how you don't do facebook, and I don't do pics on here. There should be 4 hardlines to the block, with 2 of the lines spaced out on the one side, and the 2 lines on the other side are spaced fairly close together, there should also be a round black looking plastic plug on one side of the block. If that looks familiar, that's the T-stat,lol.

Ill take a look again. this may be why i see 2 degree rise when AC is on.

Ok guys after reading this I'm a little scared. I have a 2017 bighorn hemi with the 8-speed tranny. My normal temps are tranny: 190, engine oil: 221, coolant: 204, oil pressure:53. Are these levels to high? What are the normal ranges? I want this truck to last! Thanks in advance!

From what I've heard of the 8-speeds 190 is in the normal range. The older 6-speeds run cooler. The rest of those numbers look just fine as well.
