2006 Ram 1500 4x4 with 4.7L V8. Don't know much about it as it is my brothers truck but all the electronics work. When I turn the key it sounds like the starter cuts out after hitting its RPM limit without the engine turning over. I have to do this literally 5-30 times before the truck actually starts. New fuel pump and computer completely replaced.

If the starter is spinning but the engine isn't, check the battery voltage, might be low or the terminals dirty. The starter could be going bad also.

Seemed back in the day, when a starter spun up but only engaged the flywheel every once in a while, it was usually a bad/sticky solenoid. Sometimes you can whack on the starter and loosen things up or spray some electrical cleaner in it and free it up a little, but it won't work for long so you should just replace it as soon as possible.

Any update? Also check the wires on the starter itself

Its currently in the shop and they said it may need a new transmission. The starter had always engaged and the rpms on the truck go up. It doesnt slip or anything. The starter just cuts off after hitting a certain rpm and it apparently isnt high enough for the truck to start.

Unless there is a high drag on the engine causing the starter to spin really slow, it's most likely a fuel or spark issue why the engine doesn't start. If the engine is dragging while starting it will sound like it's moaning while turning over and will be visually slow. You might want to get a second opinion about the transmission

Just an update: We are $5,000 in on the truck and it still has the same issue. Transmission has been replaced, Computer replaced, and some wiring harness was replaced. The dealership just says they cant figure it out but they are going to have to figure something out if were $5,000 in the hole.
