I know this is more of a personal preference thing but I am curious what everyone does. First start of the day I let my Ram idle for about three minutes. Just a number I picked and the truck seems to run smoother quicker than if I start it, put on my seatbelt and leave in less than a minute. I also know you aren't suppose to let them idle long.

Like I said, just curious, I think letting them warm up a little bit is a good idea, others think it's better to let them warm up on the road.

Thank you for your opinions.

I can't say what I do is the best but I'm one that starts it and probably in gear moving within 30 seconds to a minute. I don't drive them hard till it warms up to normal temperature. Been driving for 45 years, haven't lost an engine so far!

I start my truck and wait for the revs to start coming down then I go. Summer that's probably 30 to 45 seconds.
As for winter, don't know yet but that will probably be double that time even more depending on how cold it is.

When it's warmer, I let it run while I turn on my phone BT and start my music app, so maybe 30 sec. In the winter/cold (45* or less) I usually use my remote start for 5 ish minutes before leaving. As long as you aren't driving it like you stole it as soon as you start it up, you should be fine. Longer idle times mostly just waste fuel.

I fire up and wait one minute. Then drive gentle until wheel bearings, differentials, trans, etc. all warm up to operating temperature.

Except when responding to a volunteer fire alarm - then it's just fire up and hammer down. Not good for the truck, but when granny can't get up off the toilet at 0200, by golly ya gotta get there quick, ya know. :insane:

Once the idle settles, I'm off. On really cold days I remote start it from inside and wait a minute or two.

This time of year I wait until the idle settles down and then drive it easy until it warms up. Winter time I always let it idle for a few mins before driving. When its really cold (below 20*F) I remote start it and let it idle for a good 10 mins before driving it.

I've always done this with my vehicles since I started driving in the late 90s.

I always let my vehicles idle down before I take off. It just seems better, totally subjective of course.

In the winter I let em warm up, idle hours and mpg be d@mned, it's cold out there.
Same here…. we let it idle down before driving it.

When it comes off of high idle and I see the coolant temp to rise, when cold below 32 I remote start it and give it 5 min and drive off slowly.

I start it and always wait the engine get under 1000 rpm before shifting to drive. In the winter I do the same and with the block heater it take not much more time to get under 1000 rpm.

I don't like to idle an engine longer than necessary so I fire it up, give it 5-10 seconds to build oil pressure (time to buckle my seat belt, enter something into nav if needed..) and then just drive gently until up to operating temp.
