I have a 2019 Laramie 5.7 with 26k on it, it is making an odd sort of scraping or clicking noise when it is coasting down from about 40 mph to 20 mph or so. Doesn't matter if brakes are applied or not, and it goes away when I accelerate again. It kind of feels as if it only does it when the truck is in a certain gear, but I don't know if that's the case or not with this 8 speed. The noise almost sounds like a rotor scraping, but it does it with no brakes applied, just when the engine is slowing itself while coasting. I know this is a long shot, but anyone had this issue?

Almost sounds like a bad ujoint in one of the shafts, but that would be unusual with only 27K miles.

Did you get this resolved? I also have this weird kind of noise but my truck is much older than yours with many more miles.

Following up, anybody fix their issue? My 2015 5.7, w 8 speed, 4x4 just started doing this. It's strange, it seems to be tied to a specific gear the transmission is in, but could be coincidental to having the foot off the gas and being at a certain speed. The sound seems to originate from under the firewall, not directly under the floorboard, and not totally in the engine bay. I could see it being a u-joint too and will check that out too, might just replace the front U-joint and see, they're fairly cheap.

I'm reading through these similar posts as I also have the same grinding noise (09 Laramie Crew 4x4) and wish to educate myself as much as possible. My suspicion is pinion bearings but could certainly be something else. Please post any revelations or dealer interactions.

19 Ram Classic 5.7 with 8 speed I had the noise too it sounds like MDS but much worse. It goes away if I hit up or down on the electric gear shift. Most likely MDS related but it sounds different lately.

I had the same thing on a 1990's Chevrolet and it turned out to be the nut on the pinion becoming loose therefore giving a loose pinion bearing and too much slop.

Check your the rear end for fluid level, as a first step

If it is low, check the pinion seal for leaks & the same for the backing plate at both rear wheels

IF has been a long time since the differential fluid has been changed
buy some new fluid, then drain the old oil & then check the fluid for excessive metal filings

I have this exact issue with my 2019 with Hemi. Did anyone find the fix for this?

Anyone able to resolve this issue? I’m experiencing the same with 2015 4x4 1500, 8-speed. Not only the dragging sound when slowing (seems to be between 35-15mph), but also feel a noticeable drag (like brake is depressed slightly). Once it slows a little, suddenly drag and noise both disappear simultaneously.

Actually, I believe it has something to do with the front differential or transfer case? After lots of trial and error, it only appears to happen while slowing with “4WD AUTO” selected. Noise/drag instantly disappears when either shifting to Neutral or selecting “2WD.” No noise/drag when “2WD” is selected.
