Went to the dealer today...

I stopped by the dealer today. The salesman who i am working with have spoke on the phone and emails so it was good to put face to voice. I wanted to see how much they would give me on a trade in for my car and get some information. Well on the trade in lets just say i put the car on craigslist and sold it in an hour lol.

So here is the meat of my question. I am wanting a 4x2 laramie with an 8speed tranny. He said they are not making that model with the 8 speed, 4x4 yes but 4x2 no. He said he sent an email to the dealer rep to clearify. I am just curious does anyone know if this is true?

That is true there is a commodity restriction on the 2 wheel drive model.

Never hurts to have 4x4. It costs a little more up front, but 4x4s hold better resale value than a 4x2.

Thats the one thing that I dont understand, why is it so difficult to produce your product? It would seem that if you were going to advertise it it would be able to be gotten. You should not have to order a '13 model halfway through the year, unless you were asking for something special. An 8 Speed transmission with a V8 (that you have been touting for over a year) should be readily available. Can't produce it? dont advertise it. Just my .02. sorry for the rant. By the way I love my car with a box, I call it my Boxcar.

Trust me, I've gone around and around with this. If RAM wants to lead the pack, then they best get their stuff together and be able to build the truck the consumer wants in a timely manner. People plain won't wait! They'll go somewhere else. Hell, I wanted to go somewhere else, but once it's ordered your stuck. Waiting 4 months for a truck made 14 hours from your house seems a little pathetic to me.

This is a true misconception. The 4x4 cost more up front, daily driving gets less mpg, in Iowa we "need" it 1-2 weeks a year but live with it all year long. The resale is not enough to make up for any of those costs down the road.

It is a personal thing for each person to choose that is why they make them that way.

I do agree that Chrysler needs to learn to build what the people want.

Well I don't need a 4x4. I really want the V6 with the eight speed in a Laramie package. The wife wants heated seats and I want leather (easier to keep clean). I will still prob go with the Ram but the luster is quickly tarnishing.

I have to concede the towing capacity is less with 4x4, but what about pulling a trailer from a stop in mud, on gravel etc? We need 4x4 just to get through the long winters here but I think 4x4 may come in handy once in a while when towing, too.
The loss in capacity isn't that much, anyway.

I live above 7300', it snows here frequently, and more often in the mountains that I like at the 'base' of. Never had an issue with my 2wd.

Do I want a 4x4, you betcha! Am I perfectly fine with my 2wd, you betcha!
All and all, I have over 30k on the truck, and there has been maybe 200 miles total where it'd have been nice to have 4 wheel drive. the rest of em, I enjoy that extra MPG or two!

I drove my G8 as a DD here in IA with no issues. You're right, 4wd is only really needed a handful of times a year. If you get a 2wd with an LSD you should be good. Heck, our climate zone in this part of IA used to be 5 and it's closer to a 6 right now.

This doesn't need to turn into a 2wd vs 4x4 argument. The guy wants 2wd. He has his reasons. A 2wd isn't less of a truck. Saying that it's a car with a box is ridiculous. Try towing > 10,000 lbs in your Accord or Camry. BTW, I have a 4x4.

I have heard Chrysler got a bit over excited about the 8 spd and failed to ensure the supply chain was in place to support demand. Anyone heard more on that?

I live on the "it might be ice/ might be rain line" Or it might start out as rain and freeze solid between morning commute and heading home. Or, it's raining when you turn in and black ice 3" deep come wake up time.
That is when having 4x4 has saved my bacon (and paycheck).

BTW on Wednesday it was 35 in NW Iowa and 87 in SE Iowa. Sounds like heaven eh.

Leasing is a 4 point deduct here in Iowa so on a 40000-45000 truck that is a big number and it is better to "rent" a 4x4 vs 4x2.

On a lease I do not care what they (Manufacturer/Lease Company) can sell that is their problem not mine.

In 2005 I leased a loaded $40,200 ram for $150 per month 12k per year for 2 years. Could not pass on the deal. The residual value (what I can buy it for after the lease) was almost $30,000 so I turned it back in to Chrysler and the dealership purchased it back for $20,500 for the lot.
