I'm thinking about selling my 12 sport I know what the kbb and nada are but what are they actually selling for? Trying to figure out a asking price that will actually move it. It's a 2012 ram 1500 sport quad cab 4x4. Hemi rt hood every option except navigation. Heated cooled leather, 430 touchscreen, moon roof, backup camera, brake controller. Has 25k miles rhino liner bed liner, under coated to protect against rust. Wheels and badges are plasti dipped but that can be removed I know all black isn't everyone's favorite.

You could probably ask anywhere from 25-30k for it, did you check kbb personal sell instead of trade value?

I'd say you will probably get more like $25-28k out if it

KBB and NADA don't buy vehicles and I've always wondered how they calculate the value of a vehicle (they are often not close). If I want to find the value, I would go ask a dealer what the current wholesale is on a like vehicle. That will tell you what your vehicle is worth in your market area at the time.

Are you trading it in or selling it privately? Carmax is where I would start when trying to find out the value of a vehicle immediately, then I would adjust their price for trade versus private sell.

Carmax is a great resource! Rather selling or trading in a vehicle, I always get a quote from them.

For those that haven't used Carmax, the process is very easy. Take it in and ask them to evaluate it. In about 15-20 minutes, they will give you a WRITTEN offer for the vehicle. It's good for 7 days. It does not require you buy a vehicle from them. So you could just sell your car to them if you aren't happy with what another dealer will give you on trade, or maybe you just need to sell a car for some extra cash.

Most the time, I found them to hit higher than most other local dealers and I use it as a negotiation tool if trading in. If selling, I use it to gauge my bottom dollar and a few thousand for my "asking" price.

I like CarMax as well, but they will be offering you a wholesale price similar to the dealership, and not a retail price like you seem to be seeking.

Carmax is one of the nations largest sellers at dealer only auctions. They normally set the bar for trade in values on vehicles. Your best bet to get a good idea of how much you would get for your truck is to start with them. Based on the info you provided I can see the retail value is 35,123, wholesale is 30,538, and trade in is 27,638. A dealer will probably offer you 2-3k off trade in amount so they can prep it for sale and make money. Hope this helps.

I think it would be a good idea to do a search on CarMax and see if they have a Dodge on there site for sell. You got to remember though. Dealership are having sometimes $8000 off sticker. Spending an extra $2k or so for a new truck and getting the good interest rates would always win out.

dealers go off of wholesale price not kbb or nada. wholesale is what they would get if they sent it to an auction.

Hi,

Understand they have a wholesale price at auction. But they must have some idea of what that wholesale price might be. So is it safe to assume that the "idea of price" is what's in the dealer's mind, or is there a place that one could research to reveal what a wholesale range might be?

Everything is so secret in purchasing a vehicle you would think that an Almighty purpose is at stake if some or any info leaked out to us civilians. Glad that groceries are not sold the same way or we would all starve or resort to ....?

Just a quick search on auto trader witch is pretty solid shows retail from 25-31 average that out and you get 28k for retail between 22-30k miles if you want to move it I would start around 26k private seller is hard to do it take time I sold my 14 private party to someone I knew and it was still a pain. Start at car max I bet there wholesale price will be 24-25k and you know they will add 5-6k when they put it on there lot. So if you add 2-3k for your private party price you'll be right on.

I'm gonna go with this ^^

I took my old Lexus into carmax and they offered me $15k....couple weeks later I sold it to some dude for $23k.

But as others have said Carmax isn't a bad baseline starting point.
