Hi everyone, first time joining a forum I found the site searching for information on some rear end noise. I own a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 Laramie 146,600miles and still a badass truck. The rear differential is the first major problem I've had with "her", still not sure what I'm going to do as far as fixin ie...dealerparts,upgrade rear diff.,replace whole rearend from a scraper, or drive it till she locks up and I'm stuck on top of a mt. somewhere. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Nick

Welcome to RF!!! And I would say master rebuild kit and maybe new gears if needed. No need in replacing the whole thing if it can be rebuilt.

Droid Incredible 2 on the move!!!

Sorry about taking so long to reply back, was having trouble getting back to the site.
My rear diff. is making a whinning noise. The sound increases and decreases with acc and decelaration respectivily. dealer said they would open it up to see whats wrong and fix it for $1000 or more. I think if I replace the whole rearend(which I can do) It will give me the time to educate my self on the differential and get tooling.

There will be people who say you can do a diff yourself easily, and there will be other people like me who think it's worth the money to have a shop do it right and not worry about it.

I think that my 4.56 gears had it out for me, however, once all said and done, even before they went south, I felt that it would have been a few hundred well spent to have someone else do it.

I would highly recommend upgrading you ring and pinon sets front and rear to at least 4.56s. If you're still stock height etc..

4.56 is that for heavy towing? I do allot of highway driving, and yes everything is still stock at the same height.
