We all know we get ripped off up here, I’ve seen the same wheels my local shop quote $499 each for $229 in the US. Lots of the places down there don’t ship to Canada or if they do it’s very expensive plus duties and taxes.

So please share your experiences, good or bad.

I’ve done it once where it was free shipping to the states and I went across the border to Washington State and picked them up. I have family there. I might do it again this summer.

A lot of the border towns have mailbox services where you pay a few bucks a package to use them as your mailing address. When I've bought custom wheels in the past it was my local tire ship, but I priced checked at a binch of them to see who would be my local tire shop and wheels I bought were fairly close in price to anywhere online at the time.

I went with OE Wheels out of FLA and had them shipped to my “drop box service “ just across the boarder. I got Hellcat Replicas 22x10 with tires for the price of tires alone here in Canada. Mind you, I try to keep money in the country, but some days (most?) its hard to do that.

Late but for newcomers to this thread, I am buying my wheels from Tirecraft (which has a number of canadian locations). the price i'm getting them for is less than CARID which surprised me. Also, less than CanadianWheels online which had some of the best prices I've seen. I'm in Airdrie AB but there were 6 of them in stock in Calgary so they are able to get them in for me day after I went in to order them. No pressure sale, they didn't push like Kal Tire to use "their" tpms's or lug nuts. Wheels, balance, install..boom, done.

My wheels and tires are from Urban X, they have 3 locations in Calgary all independently owned but they all offer the same products and amazing service. I’m fortunate that one closest to me in the south is owned by someone I’ve known since high school. If anyone needs tires or wheels give them a call.

Good to know Clever. Don't know how many times I searched tire places in Calgary and never have heard of them. I've added the NE location to my maps:)

Bob owns that location I believe, I have heard nothing but great things about him and I know that he has helped other truck owners with different products not just tires, such as tonneau covers among other things and they usually price match or get a better discount than some of the bigger retailers.

I’ve decided to support a local shop in Victoria SHC.
They are giving a very fair price and I would probably pay the same from a big USA company after exchange rate, shipping, and duty etc etc

Good to know. There's lots of places. Haven't been burned yet, but would like to find a go to place not too far from me (in Airdrie).

yeah, i absolutely try to support local guys. there's certain things, like tires and rims that I just don't have the tolerance for having shipping mishaps, product issues having to return stuff especially large items. I've always been prepared to pay a bit more money for something to buy it local, unless I know they are being too greedy. i was very pleasantly surprised when i compared the price of the rims i'm getting locally with online places. and its already got me thinking that when i do get tires, i will definitely check them out first.

With all lot of local places I find for any large ticket item I'll talk to them first about how this is that much more here than.....
Even if they come back with a better but still a bit higher price I normally drop the cash on them knowing I now have a working relationship with them if the product has an issue.
They still make some money and we can both feel warm and fuzzy.
Support local. Your own job may depend on the same.

Shiva,
Totally agree with you. Spending local helps keep the brick n mortar operations in business. That said, many Canadian outlets act like their doing you a favour or your imposing on their daily routine by doing business with them. Little to no service before during or after the sale. When I find a good local vendor, and build that relationship, I tend to stick with them even when the cost may be a few bucks more. One in particular will advise me to “...go on line T, we can’t come close to that price!” They always get first crack at the sale with me.

T.
