Where do you find the GCVW on this truck?

I have a 2014 Laramie Longhorn 1500 with the towing package, short box, and 3.21 rear diff.

According to the RAM website for this truck, I should be able to tow an 8,200 pounds trailer. The truck itself has a max GVWR of 6800 pounds.

1. Does the GVWR include the tongue weight from the trailer (which should be around 1,000 to 1,200 pounds). (I'm aware of not exceeding the axles weights.)

2. Where do you find the Combined Vehicle Gross Weight information? I thought there would be a tag somewhere on the truck but I can't find it. It isn't on the white door tag that has the VIN, axle weights, GVWR, etc.

Help!

GVWR is any weight that is carried by your tires. Tongue weight is on the truck, therefore the tires. Passengers, gear, firewood, bikes, etc all count against your GVWR.

I don't want to be "that guy" but Ram's have notoriously LOW payload ratings. A half ton with decent options will likely have pretty low payload. A trailer with 1000 or 1200 lbs will likely max out your payload... especially if you add an additional 75 lbs of weight distribution hitch. I would suggest you look for a trailer with closer to 700 or 800 lbs hitch weight.

OK, good comments.

Any insight on the Combined Vehicle Gross Weight information?

To illustrate how frustrating this is, the RAM website says I should have an 8,200 max towing weight. The owner's manual doesn't list the 8 speed transmission at all but says the 6 speed has a 10,150 max towing weight.

It's amazing how much of a difference that 1 ton of weight can make when selecting a travel trailer.

I really need to determine this max towing weight because I'm supposed to be pulling the trigger on a travel trailer in the next couple of weeks that has a 9200 pound weight limit.

Sadly, the longhorns are usually into popup or small hybrid territory due to the tongue weight vs GVWR/ GAWR unless you have only a single passenger and almost nothing in the bed. My 1500 Laramie was a cripple- 946lbs payload. If your tongue weight will stretch into the 1000lbs plus, you're going to go way over GVWR. I am not saying your truck will explode, or really anything may happen- but some guys aren't comfortable with that. I did it, it handled ok, but you could sure tell I was heavy but it did fine and pulled like a mule.

Owners manual should list all drive trains and the weight you may tow.
Door tag will list what each axle is rated for, add the two for total weight of the vehcile, including hitch weight and passngers.

Take to scales , if wondering.

Rams will tow, haul plain old move more weight than stated. However that is teh max legal weight allowed. anything above it is yoru repsoncibility. Not your insurance carriers, as an example. it is illegal.

think of those email picture, which everyone has seen, of some severely overloaded vehicle, in some third world Sh*thole.

Can it be done? Yes,
is it wise? No

I tend to stay within the limits.
Anytime I am tempted to go beyond the stated limits, I ask myself,
"Are you willing to risk everything you own, or ever will own?"

Promptly followed by,"Do you want your overloaded rig to end up in some e-mail?"

If planning on pulling that 9200lb trailer, very often or very far, it needs a 3/4 ton truck to do it right.

Short distances, 2-3time per yr, 1/2 is fine, if done slowly and with proper load out and knowledge of weather & wind conditions.
THough I woudl upgrade the brakes.

Nothing worse than being maxed out or near maxed out, weight wise, in high winds or when needing to stop suddenly.

Luck to you, sir and hope you always have safe travels.

Guys, thanks very much for the info. Special shout-out to Smurfs for the table -- that's exactly what I needed.

As an experienced RVer, I know all too well that it's not what you can "start" (pulling) with your truck, it's what you can stop safely. That's why I was concerned and, honestly, confused by all of the different numbers from what should be a reliable source -- RAM. The RAM website has one towing value for the Longhorn configuration. The owner's manual doesn't even list an AT8 configuration. Other "respected" websites have yet another value. And we're not talking about just a couple of pounds. We're talking about several hundred pounds, up to 2000 pounds or more difference in these towing weights.

I always try to over-buy my tow vehicle. In this case, I already have a truck that I love and really do not want to sell it and buy a larger tow vehicle.

So, it's decision time -- buy a smaller travel trailing that MAY meet our needs, buy a new truck and buy a trailer that WILL meet our needs, or keep the Longhorn, buy a Class A motorhome, and tow my wife's SUV behind the motorhome.

If it weren't 9 AM my time, I'd pop a beer right now. This all makes my head hurt. :roflsquared:

Thanks again, guys! :)

It's 5 o'clock somewhere. Let us know which way you go with it- we all like looking at pictures of shiny new things, and it looks like you have a healthy set of options to make it work for you. Good luck!
