It's open.I know the input to the filter goes to the fender well. But I don't think the fender well is actually open. Water and mud would infiltrate in no time.
Untitled by RAM RSM, on FlickrNo water excursions intended in my future. I just want to know what I would be up against if such a thing were to happen. Flooding seems to be becoming more common, and I've found myself near some flooded roads a couple times. Just my Boy Scout training kicking in.

The black piece of plastic here is the intake tract that goes to the fender, and there is a hole in the fender. Water could get in there but you'll have to go deep so the water is above the fender. If you're considering such incursions, it will be a good idea to install one of those safary like snorkel (you'll have to make a hole in the fender from the outside) and also extend all your diff/trans/tc etc breathers.
