I have a 1994 ram 1500 5.9 with an automatic transmission and a push button Overdrive On /off. Is this transmission a 3, 4 or 5 speed transmission? When on the highway at 50 to 60+ mph I feel like it should shift into a higher gear. The on/off button for overdrive is not lite so I believe the overdrive is on.

Your transmission is the 46RH which is a 4-speed unit. The overdrive, which is 4th gear, is always on when you first start the engine. The only way to disable 4th gear is to press the O/D Off button on the instrument panel.

To determine 4th gear operation, when you are cruising at 50 your tach RPM should be around 1400rpm if I remember correctly.

Accelerate to highway speeds, like 70mph, and see what the tach says. If it's over about 2100rpm then 4th gear is not engaged.

The only electronics on this trans is the O/D solenoid and the reverse lamp switch. If your trans is not engaging 4th gear when requested it may be the O/D solenoid causing the problem or the O/D piston/seal may be damaged.

Testing the O/D solenoid operation would be my first step if you can verify that 4th gear is not engaging.
