Bought a 4.7 was told it was a 4 plug 32 tone motor turns out it’s a 16 tone. So going to pull crankshafts out of both motors and swap the tone rings. Also the cam tone ring. I have searched this and seems that’s all that needs to be done.. I have seen a post or 2 about the timing chains being different though saying like the 16 tone also used a 25 tooth crank sprocket and a 32 tone uses a 30 tooth crank sprocket ??? Is this true or not ??? I hope not as I’ve seen so many saying they just swap the tone rings and go with it. Sucks we were lied to in the first place but I believe it’s worth the trouble to do the swap as it’s only got 43k miles and looks like new and clean

You have nothing to worry about. Swap the tone rings over and be done. Make sure you clean off the old thread sealer on the crankshaft tone ring fasteners and use new thread sealer when torquing the fasteners to spec. Please make sure you torque the fasteners on the crankshaft tone ring and torque the cam gear bolts.

Ok got the boys 03 4.7 tore down and tone ring off. Next will be tearing down the good motor with the 16 tone wheel. From research looks like new rod bolts will be needed. This good motor looks to be a 2000 model from markings... I’m assuming all these 4.7 motors use the same rod bolts just wanted to ask before buying. Thanks..

Yes they do utilize the same rod bolts. Grab a new set and be done.

So it’s really 25 inch pounds on the mains plus 90*
If you follow the steps correctly, then yes, bolts 1-10 on the bedplate are torqued to 25 in-lbs + a 90° turn.

Tighten bolts A – L to 54 N·m (40 ft. lbs.)
Tighten bolts 1–10 to 2.8 N·m (25 in. lbs.)
Turn bolts 1–10 an additional 90°.
Tighten bolts A1– A6 to 27 N·m (20 ft. lbs.)

Did i just do the same thing? 04 ram 1500 4x4 4.7 5 speed manual tranny blown head gasket milky oil. Donor truck 04 ram 1500 4X4 4.7 auto tranny. Both have the 8th digit N VIN. Pulled the motor from the donor ( auto tranny ) and was getting ready to remove my motor when i looked at the firewall and noticed that my truck had a three plug PCM and my donor had a 4 plug. Could this possibly be due to one being an automatic and mine being a standard ? Lord I hope so if not am i fixing to run into the same situation? Thanks for any help.

Your truck still has an NGC PCM which has 4 plugs but the plug of the far right is not used. Since your truck is an original manual trans the 4th plug is not used because that is the plug for the trans for the automatic trucks.

You're good to go. Motor swap and be done.

Sir you do not know how much you helped me with this. After work I got home and rechecked my PCM and just like you said there was a fourth plug that was vacant. Your knowledge and the fact that you shared it with a complete stranger is overwhelming. There would have been 10 different shops around here that would have took me to the bank on this. If you have a pateron or PayPal i would gladly give you a donation for your service.

Thank you again,

Hey man. No worries. I try to help as many people as I can.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. There is a ton of quality information here in this forum although sometimes it is not the easiest to find.
