I will be ordering a new Big Horn and will get it with a Rambox, but I want to know if
I should order it with the tonneau cover or get one later.
Any feedback from someone that has had the factory cover would be appreciated!
Thanks!

I hated the factory soft tri-fold cover. So I went with the back-flip hard tri-fold cover. But it required swapping the black utility rails for the silver ones.

Sure, good luck with your new truck order. Not sure how familiar you are with the rambox option, but you should know that it doesn’t automatically come with the bed divider like it did on 4th gens. You also need to order it with the Bed utility Group (BUG) to get the bed divider.

For simplicity reasons, just order it with the truck. That way you know youll have whats needed to use with the rambox. Plus, the Mopar tonneau cover is made by a name brand tonneau company anyway
It would be the easiest way to have some kind of bed cover. If it works for you that’s great. But having owned one I gave my opinion of what I thought of it.

It’s pointless to order the factory tonneau cover if he’s going to replace it with another type. The black rails that come with the factory cover only work with that cover, and he’ll have to spend more money to buy the silver rails needed for pretty much any other aftermarket cover.

It’s possible he will be happy with the factory cover. I would suggest he take a look at one for himself.

What didnt you like about the factory tonneau cover? I cant imagine that its much different than a regular tri-fold from say like Gator or something. I didnt order my truck and it doesnt have a rambox bed so I dont really know anything about the them orher than the bed is narrower that a regular bed. I bought a cheap no name brand $179 soft roll up cover off amazon for my 6.5 bed and I couldnt be happier with it. After 5 years it still looks and performs like the day I installed it

I didn’t like how high it sits on the bed. I also didn’t like the release mechanism for opening it. I guess the main thing I didn’t like about it is the same reason I don’t have a soft roll-up anymore. It’s not secure. Someone could easily just cut it open to access the bed. My back-flip is a hard cover and is much more secure than any soft cover.

No doubt. Tthe way I look at it is, if someone wanted something I have under the cover they'll take it no matter what. Im not ok with that but I just want to eliminate as much risk to the actual truck as possible. Id rather have them cut the cover than try to bend and pry at the bed and cause major damage to the truck. It just comes down to preference

Maybe, but I figure they’ll move on to an easier target if they see a hard bed cover. I’m okay with taking that risk. Most people who would break into a truck bed know how difficult it would be to break into a hard cover. Why make it easy for them?

I definitely would not order the OEM bed cover. I had one that came on a 2015 Ram with the rambox. I’ll first say it worked ok. It only flips twice. So 1/3 of your bed is still covered. If at that point you need more open bed space, you’ll need to remove it. Not bad if you’re home, but if not, then you need to stash it in your bed.
Biggest issue comes if you want to go aftermarket. You get specific rails with the OEM cover (black), without, you get silver rails. The silver rails are needed to fit most aftermarket covers. When I went through this, the silver rails cost was around $160 a side. That was about 10 years ago.
I was able to find a guy looking for a cover for a truck he bought used. Luckily he had the same size 6.5’ bed as I had. I swapped out his silver rails onto my truck and mounted my cover & rails on his.
Also, make sure you add the “bed utility group” BUG.

You bring up a great point. The BUG comes with the silver rails. People have been reporting that it's difficult to source the silver rails right now, so it would be better to get them when you order the truck with the BUG. If you order the factory bed cover you'll get the black rails.

Great thoughts you guys, thank you. The problem is I can't find anyone who has a Rambox, let alone with the factory cover. Ramboxes must be really rare because I have never seen one other than online :-( Nevertheless I think they are a great option and I definitely need one to keep all the misc stuff that ends up behind my seat. The reason I was leaning toward a hard cover was as was mentioned: more security. I know that it can be broken into, but with more effort.

When I got my 19 Laramie Longhorn it came with the factory Mopar hard trifold bed cover which was in reality a Bakflip MX4 from 2018/19 and the silver rails and Ramboxes. Just upgraded to the newest MX4 which is lighter and thinner but just as strong. See pics below for the new one. Whoever owned the truck before me got it with the Bed Utility Group from the dealer lot new.

GEEZ $950 for BUG??? That seems a lot for what is in that group! So if I don't get that I can't get an aftermarket cover attached?

That’s not what I’m saying. But aftermarket bed covers require the silver utility rails. Right now the silver rails are hard to find for both sides. Keep in mind, if you combine it with the Rambox option, the BUG also gets you the bed divider (about $1100 if you buy it separately) and silver rails, which as I mentioned are difficult to find. Even if you can find them they’re several hundred dollars. The BUG is a good value, especially if you are also getting the Rambox option.

I chose to get the factory cover when I ordered my truck and it's a "nice to have" on the occasions when I want to use it but I hardly ever do.

Got my 2025 leftover back in November. Had dealer add the mopar hard top folding cover. Much better than the aftermarket one I put on my Ford. Mainly cause it’s a lot lighter so easier to lift.

Just to show another option, I have a Full Fiberglass Cover (Mopar) on my 2019. Does limit access and useability of the bed. But I have a 14 foot trailer to use to get stuff. The cover is not hard to take off but is a 2 person op. Just me, 2 doggos and a hossie here.

Now if U have Ram Boxes, not sure what Mopar is gonna offer as I do not have Ram Box Option.

I always had a hard cover on the last three Rams' I owned. I got a 2025 Longhorn that had Ram Boxes and it came with a soft factory cover. I just didnt like the soft cover. As mentioned if you opt to go to a hard cover you have to get a set of silver bed rails. Not cheap and not easy to find at the time I did it...about 6 months ago. My favorite bed cover was Undercover solid one piece but it wasnt made to fit bed with RamBoxes.
