My son is in the market to trade in his 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 megacab with a twin turbocharged diesel and about 170K miles for a 2012 3500 Laramie Limited 3500 with the turbo charged diesel with 111k miles on it. This new truck has every possible option that was available in 2012 plus new tires and rims, except this one is a crew cab and not the megacab. His 2006 is a manual and this new one is an automatic, which is one of the main reasons he's looking at it. He's been shifting for so long and drives in a lot of traffic so he's ready to switch to an automatic. The dealer is asking $33.9 for this truck. Does this sound like a reasonable price? I know this engine is just getting broken in and the truck looks very clean. Just looking for some additional opinions on it.

Thanks

Thats a fair price if its a dually. I wouldnt let the CC vs MEGA detour me from buying it. I would pull up the carfax report and ask to see all the service records from the previous owner(s) and the dealer(s) that serviced it. Be very costly to fix if it wasn`t serviced properly.

33.9k for a 6 year old truck with 111k on it. For the love of god HELL NO. He could get a brand new tradesman with the same power plant for 43k.
Yes I understand it’s not a Laramie limited, but the interest rate on a 6 year old truck is gonna be steep... and he is gonna pay for it in the end... while if his credit is good, he could get anywhere from 0% - 2.9% On a new truck. Tell him to do the math on the APR for the used one and a new one. I bet the 6 year old truck while being 10k cheaper ends up costing more in the long run. Keep us posted.

I would look at a new Tradesman also. That is a big chunk of money for something that is now out of warranty. I get it is probably market value, but still though, it would kill me to have that much money ******* in a used vehicle with no warranty recourse.

One thing I didn't mention is that he's either trading his existing truck for 22k or selling it outright for closer to 25k. So this truck is only 9-12k out of pocket. But we appreciate the feedback. Unfortunately I know my son and I think he's already sold on this truck. So unless a big issue comes up, I suspect it's a done deal.

Thanks, I'll update this when he makes a decision.

I'll also add that 111k on the Cummins isnt a lot and the rest of the truck is spotless. There are other trucks very similar to this one with even more mileage in the 38k range listed on the web, so this asking price doesn't seem too far off. But I understand what folks are saying, this definitely isn't everyone's cup of tea.

My son is 29 and a pilot for AA, so I know he can deal with any problems that pop up. But he can't swing a new diesel ram right now.

One thing I did not see anyone post about.

I bought a 07 2500 6.7 6sp auto with 94k and all I did was start working on the truck.
Installed new front wheel bearings, new brakes pads rotors and calipers , had to delete it and costume tune, then the turbo went out and both bed sides started rusting out.
The frontend was all loose and sloppy and the gear box was shot so the whole front end needed rebuilt.
I finally had enough when I realized the torque converter was going bad and the trans was slipping by 150k.

Everyone knows the Cummins will last for ever but the rest on the truck wont with out replacement parts and at that mileage is about when you haft to get your wallet out and start buying parts.

I just bought a truck and have 830 credit score - shopped interest rates hard - 0-2.9% doesn't exist for a five year note.

I bought my 18 in March.. I have 2.9%... so maybe it doesn’t in the part of the country you are in, but it can be had. That additional 12k of financing may add up, but if your son is smart, he will make gigantic payments for a year and try to get it paid off as to not pay to much in interest. I’m not saying the price isn’t on par with the market for used diesels... I’m saying the used diesel market is a FCKN joke...has been for the last 4 years and sadly it’s not getting any better, I just couldn’t stomach to spend 33k on a 6 year old truck, when a brand new one is less than 10k away.

For what’s it worth, I had a 2012 2500 CTD, and it was pre-DEF. it had an EGR only. That’s worth something if you don’t want to deal with DEF, as the first year the system was pretty buggy. I believe the later 2012 models came with the DEF system as it was introduced around that time.

I also had my EGR unplugged, it sets a CEL in the dash but runs fine. I ran thousands of miles that way and it acted like a diesel again with 20+ mpg, and I wasn’t dumping raw exhaust back into the intake.

If he is going to delete the emissions then it’s a non-issue.

Yes, it's Pre DEF and the shop will disconnect the EGR (but leave it in place) and install a tune and an exhaust.... If he makes the deal.

It isn't a diesel, but per kBB, my 2012 Laramie hemi is still worth 28-32k, and I only paid 33k for it when I got it, so their price may not be too crazy.

where are you getting this figure? trade in value for my 17 Laramie is around there. I ran a 2012 and it came in around 17.5k trade in with a dealer price of around 22k

I am sure it is a regional thing. Everybody and their dog has a truck in Texas. Come up here to the North East, and it is way less so. Noticed that when I moved from San Antonio up here a few years back.

The Auto trans won't hold up to the Cummins. Better off staying with a manual, :imo:

^ the auto trans will take more aftermarket Hp and stock go/Tq than the manual will, that’s why they de rate the manual trans motors.... or am I wrong?
