I bought my first Ram the first week of June. I purchased it from a small car dealer. The truck I bought is a lifted 2013 4x4. I asked about a warranty and he told me it is the remainder of factory warranty. 3 years or 100 thousand miles. I thought that's cool because it only has 49 thousand miles on it and I should have 7 months left before the 5 years is up. Well the service airbag light flickered on and off for a few days then stayed on. Also I was underneath looking and seen the main transmission seal is starting to go and leaking out the bottom of the bell housing. I came in and googled and found that Ram recalled my year for bad air bag sensors so I figured that would be taken care of. I called the local Dodge dealer and he took my VIN number and told me that my warranty ran out 2 weeks ago. He said the warranty isn't till January 2018, it's 5 years from when the original owner purchase date. GRRRR. As far as the airbag recall, he told me that until he hooks it up to his computer to find out if I'm eligible for the recall that I would be responsible for the computer hookup. 150 bucks. I would've never bought this truck if I knew I only had about a 3 week warranty. Not very happy. Am I being lied to or is that the way the warranty works

No, the factory warranty starts from the day its originally sold to it's first owner..... so if the warranty was 3 yrs/ 36,000 miles and you bought it 2 yrs later used with 24,000 miles on it, your remaining factory warranty would be 1 yr / 12,000 miles.

I bought my 2014 at the end of 2015 so even though my truck is a 2014 the warranty didn't start until 2015 when I bought it.

Right. It's what they call the in-service date.

Yeah, this can really burn people when a 2013 model is sold and put into service early in 2012.

Hi Grtrnd1,

The 2013 truck would have two factory warranties--the basic 3 year/36K mile warranty, and the powertrain 5 year/100K mile warranty, both starting from the original in service date of the vehicle. In terms of recalls, you can check for recalls yourself without having to involve the dealership, by going to recalls.mopar.com. This will show you any recalls at all, whether completed, open, or one that is open but does not have parts available.

Let me know if you need any more info about your truck!

Thanks everyone. That's what the dealer said too. In service date. I just missed it by 2 weeks. Boy is that a ever loving kick in the backside. As far as the recall. I googled 2013 Dodge ram recalls and it shows that my year is on the recall for the service airbag light. The dealer said they wouldn't be able to tell if my truck is affected by the recall till the hook it up to their computer and check and I would be responsible for that cost. Alot of these smaller shops claim they can't check airbag systems on the Dodge trucks. As far as the leaking main seal, it's not leaking bad but I know it's there and it is going to bother me. I'm sure it won't be something a backyard mechanic can just do in a weekend.

Had this exact same issue a week or two ago. Was bringing the truck in for other things but had them check it out. Apparently it is a common issue because the wires are all under the driver seat and can easily be tweaked slightly causing an error. Check under your driver seat and make sure the wires are going from A-B without any unnecessary kinks or bends, and be mindful to not put anything under the driver seat or anything that can roll and obstruct the harnesses. Dealer just straightened out the wires and called it a day (other stuff still to come)

Grtrnd1,

Like I said, you can check recalls.mopar.com for more recall info. It is absolutely not true that a dealership would need to hook anything up to check if you have an open recall--they simply look up your VIN. If the recall was completed and you are still having an issue, only then would you be looking at diagnostic charges to figure out the cause.

Please feel free to send me your VIN if you'd like me to check.
