So it's looking like I'm trading in my 06 ram 1500 and looking to buy a certified pre owned 09-15 Ram.

I brought my 06 to the dealer today and it's looking like my TIPM needs to be replaced (close to a grand) and a bunch of stuff in the cooling system is messed up aswell and it's looking like another grand to repair that aswell.

So I'm most likely going to trade it in and put the money towards a slightly used 4th gen.

My question is. What should I be looking for in terms of problem areas and issues on 4th gens?

Anything in particular I should be looking for?

Thanks for the help and hopefully tomorrow I'm the new owner of a 4th Gen quad cab :)

If you go 1500 get the 8 spd and 3.92 gears.

I've not had many complaints with my 4th gen except for having to replace the engine very early in my ownership. Early 6.4L engines had a wrist pin defect. But other than that and a vibration that was a driveshaft issue, my '14 has been pretty trouble free.

Good luck.

X3 on the 8 speed. I haven't owned one with the 6 speed but lots of people on here like the 8. What types of accessories are you looking for?

Anti-spin diff will help a bit when the snow starts to pile up. It's a nice compliment to the 4x4 IMO.

Are you staying in the half ton range or are you considering 3/4 is there a specific year or trim or certain needs that you have for a truck. do you tow/haul, is it your daily driver, is it going to used for regular basis work that will put some abuse on it??

Do it! You'll be glad you did.

My 2014 had some issues initially with the 8.4 uConnect but had it replaced under warranty.

I'd look for the 8 speed, 3:92, and anti spin diff. Check out the steering to make sure you have no clunks lock to lock--going into driveways full crank left or right. Also check for any vibrations at highway speeds or under full acceleration from a complete stop. Happy hunting!

If you can swing it, 2014 might be a good choice. 8-speed in a lot of models, so they should be easy to find. First year of 100,000 mile plug changes, up from 30,000. Improved mileage (small) over previous years but notable.

If you find a 3:21 rear end, drive it. You may be pleasantly surprised. I have a 14 Sport with the 3:21 and it's fine. The ratio depends on what do you want to do with it and how you like to drive it. Others have opinions, however, you know what you like.

Just note that 3:92's will receive slightly lower MPG's, nothing drastic. But take that into consideration if you have fuel consumption in the back of your mind. If you plan on towing/hauling a lot/heavy things then go with 3:92's.

First thing I noticed when I traded my 05 for my 15, was the ride.
Oh the ride.....so much better without the leafs.

The motor is noticeably stronger as well.

As others have said, get an 8 speed. I've not driven one with 3.92's but my 3.21's pull pretty good.

Did I mention the ride......

Good luck.

The 3.92 is not a must have. Unless your towing over 8k. The 3.21 with the 8 speed will get out of its own way just fine. Get the options you will use everyday.

3.21 LSD with 33' aggressive all-terrains/winter tires. No issues spinning the tires on take off. No towing. Planning on going 3.55 or 3.92 in the future for bigger tires after my lift.

I just traded my 05 1500 in for a used 14 2500 Laramie with 19k on it Friday. I was real concerned about the ride quality being a 2500 but I need the payload. This sob feels better than my 1500!! gotta be the coil springs in the rear. My 1500 had aftermarket airbags in the rear too. 6.4 is also impressive.

So I ended up getting a 2012 RCSB express with 32k miles. 5.7L Hemi, 3.55 rear, K&N 63 series, flowmasters, Lund tonneau, stock 20's.

I love it. After trading my 06 and putting up the $2500 I would have used to fix my 06, I only had $6k difference. Added extended bumper to bumper for another 5 years/100k miles so I'm happy with that.

I love this thing. Once i get my wheels put on tomorrow, I'll snap some more pics.

I mean the way this thing drives compared to my 2006?!?!? OMG! It's so damn fast, it rides like it's floating compared to my 06 lol. This truck is the first vehicle I've ever owned with a warranty! Super stoked!!

You're going to love having all that extra money in your pocket for other things even more by not listening to the majority of the replies you got in this thread ;)

Don't get me wrong, I would love to have got a Quad/Crew Cab, or a new 16 but the cheapest quad cab they had was $8k more than the RCSB I got. Add another $8k to my payments and I'm going from $160 a month to like $350 a month.

No thanks. This truck is fine for me, I dont have any kids or anything, I dont do heavy towing and moving ****... this is basically a "car" for me. A daily driver. I'm happy with this because it's loghter, faster and more sporty looking then the quads and crew cabs.

In the end, I'm paying $160 a month for 4 years. I'd rather that, than say $400 a month for 6 years lol.
