To fit 35" tyres, what do I need?

Hi

Just bought my 1500 a few months ago and am planing to fit larger tyres - to help with the look of the car and occasional off roading on the sand dunes.

It's very hard to get proper advice in this region; everything has to be bought from the US and shipped over. Hope you can help me make the right purchase as return shipping is very expensive...!

As I don't want the car any higher than it currently is so I can still get into certain height restricted spaces here, I would like only the front lifted to be the same level as the rear.

One shop has advised me
1. Procomp 2.5 inches front Spacer
2. Mickey Thompson STZ or General Tire 31/70 R17
3. Suitable 17" Rims

My questions are:
1. Will the specified tyres fit my car?
2. Do the Procomp's have 'bump stops' and do I need them?
3. Will I need to fit any fender flares to accommodate the larger tyres (such as Bushwacker)?
4. Prefer less road noise over off road traction, are the above tyres quiet?
5. Do the Rim style make a difference to how much the wheel sticks in/out of the wheel arch?

Thanks
Al.

This will be a handful to answer....lol

All in all, you said you wanted to go offroading and sand dunes.
with 2.5" level you will need proper offset rims.
If you know of the ram runners which are designed for sand dunes, they have about 2.5" of lift, but they do have special suspension to articulate and travel quite a bit. They also do have wider fenders.
In this case, flares wont help, it may just hinder your off road experience with possibility of rub.
9" wide rim and 0 offset of 8"-8.5" with 0 offset is what you'll want as the most negative as the wheels will need to tuck inside the fenders.
That being said.....actual 35's maybe too wide as they do extend slightly past the fenders.
1) you will need bump stops to ensure it doesn't hit your fenders, you will will need narrower tires, that are still near 35's

Id say a 315/70/17 to achieve the height, but they you have the width problem.
I would actually do the level do a slightly larger 33" like a 33.5", like a 295/70/17.
This way you have height, articulation ability, tires not too wide to create rub when your truck flexes or bounces up and down.

Hope this helps somewhat

But as rut1095 posted his, this may work too.
I may just have over assumed the sand dunes and off-roading....LOL
If he was to fly down a sand dune with his truck, his tires would certainly be hitting the fender trim.

If I did over assume, then what you stated above will work :D

Thanks for the responses. I did some reading up on tyre sizes to get a better understanding.

My off roading will be very limited and I don't intend (at least for now) chucking my car around sand dunes.

Rut1095 - you don't seem have done anything in addition to your car asides from the front lift (wider fenders etc.), in order to put on the 315/70 17. I'm assuming so far you haven't encountered any rubbing issues? If so, I think I'll go the simple route of the lift and 315/70 17.

From what I can understand of fastNugly, the key in this set up would be getting the rims with the correct offset.

Cheers
Al.

One problem you may encounter with no offset and wider tires will be rubbing at full lock when you turn. I had this issue in my 97 Ram on 33's. I don't know if the new Rams are different, but backspacing on the wheel will allow you to turn without this issue. I haven't made any MODs to my new Ram yet, so I don't know if this is still the case. Hopefully someone will confirm this or correct me.

Offset is probably the most critical aspect here.
I do have a local buddy here (also on the boards) who ran a 2.5" level and 37" BFG AT tires.
Many thought he was crazy and that it would not fit.
But again....with the proper offset, it fit with VERY MINIMAL rub. And it only rubbed on the plastic inner liner. So not a big deal.
Now he is lifted and no rubbing

But as you can see, offset is key

This is correct ^^^
Back spacing/offset (go hand in hand) are key to proper fitment.
Once you nail this down and understand what tires you want you are good to go

I'll post more pics tomorrow of front and back. Been at the beach and now it's has been raining ever since I got home. It's leveled with RC 2.5 front only. I didn't mess with the rear. The tread sticks out about an inch from the fender. Looking at flares for the sides but haven't decided.

Go with stock 1500 flares as they have coverage of 3/4"
of course, if you decide to put flares on

you could go with the rough country 3.75 inch lift, its the 2.5 inch level plus 1.25 body lift. now in the picture you you will see my truck is higher in the back, reason being i requested the larger back spacer rather then the .75 inch one that comes with the kit. i tend to carry my snowmobile or dirt bike and god knows what els around a bit. so i didnt like the look i would see of trucks squat out with a load in. so i went with a little boost in back, i also like a little rake in my vehicals, but everybody is different.
i have 35x12.50x20 cooper STT tires on 20x9 moto metals with a +18 offset which is pritty close to stock offset. at full **** my truck just barely rubs on the control arm. cheers bud!

Pictures of the finished cars look great.

So after much reading and advice, I've ordered

- Bilstein 5100 Front and Rear Shocks (I'm going to try and keep the car levelled with this set up with the back the same height as stock)
- Fuel D509 17" wheels
- Mickey Thompson 315/70R15 STZ tyres

Shop advised that the ride with the Bilstein's would improve.

Coming in by container ship so need to wait a few long months for them to arrive and get fitted.

Let's hope there are no issues...

Cheers

I have a 2.5" spacer and had these 35x12.50r17 Nitto Trail Grappler MTs installed today. The rim is a 17x8.5" with a -6 offset. I'll be installing the Rough Country 1.25" BL next weekend.
