Hey forum, I need assistance. I have a 2012 RAM 1500 5.7 I have a pretty bad cold start noise. That has been happening since I bought my truck with 64k miles about a month ago. Dealer says they haven't heard it as its a cold start issue. Blah blah blah. They won't keep my truck just want to give me the run around. I believe they new before they sold it to me. Laughed at me when I told them about it and said " I already sold you the truck." ... So I'm left trying to figure it out. Cold start it lasts approximately 30 secs and gets loud and nasty. Then disappears returning intermittently accelerating or idle. Seems to be no method to its madness. On occasion I can get it to do it while giving it pedal. But as it warms that doesn't work. Sometimes it just won't go away
Yanno when I'm going through a parking lot full of ppl etc. Gotta love it. Smh. I have to make a trip from FL to VA soon and I'm quite concerned. Any help would be appreciated to say the least. I believe maybe exhaust manifold trouble but am wondering if it could be more. Thank you guys .

Sorry if video isn't perfect and about half way through it stops and runs normally. There are no issues with rpm or response or anything when it's doing it just loud and annoying. Doesn't sound good lol

Some dealers are SNAKES !
Unfortunately it looks like you've found one .....

Sounds like it's been serviced with 20 wt oil for 64 k ....

1rst thing I'd do is : get a UOA kit from Blackstone Labs. ....then

#1 ) get the oil hot and drain it , approximately 1/2 way through the drain catch an oil sample and Send it in to Blackstone labs. ... post a picture of the lab report here for an extended explanation of the analysis.

#2 replace the filter with a Royal Purple RP 10-48 filter .

#3 pour in PUP aka Pennzoil Ultra Platinum oil in a mix ratio of 3ea qts of PUP 5W-30 & 4ea qts of 0W-40 or 7 ea qts of Redline 5W-30 oil ...

Both of the above oils have extra ppm of moly , the Redline has more and also has more Zinc which your 5.7 likely needs in a bad way .
Give it 500 -750 miles to make an audible difference imo . It takes some time for the moly & zinc to plate properly .

Good luck and keep us informed here !

Do you get the Redline oil locally from a big name parts store or online? 2. Ever try the Redline oil additive?

R.l.k I will most definitely take your advice! I am highly greatful for your advice! I have 35k left on original warranty and when I purchased I bought the 20k extended warranty. Do you believe this would be covered? I'm going to try another dealership tomorrow I believe and see if they will help me out. I believe the reason it wasn't making this sound when I bought it is because they had to bring it from their sister ( same dealership name) store in next town over. I think I'm going to try to take it there and see what they say. Shouldn't this be covered? It wasn't cold when I heard it. Feeling like a dinkus lol if I have no luck I will gladly take steps you've pointed out and I'm going to post on the thread you've just mentioned after I feed these boy's. Thank you very much for you time and attention in this!

Sincerely Si

@Silence , if it's your cam or lifters failing ( too common in the 5.7L) then yes this should be covered in a power train warranty Sir !

I purchase my Redline products from Jegs.com , best price I've found with free shipping , or on Amazon Prime with free shipping .

@Silence , another common problem with the 5.7L is the exhaust manifold warping and actually breaking the exhaust manifold bolts ! This is very common and also covered on the power train warranty Sir !

Good luck and keep us posted here , or on the synthetic oil thread I linked above ...as there's plenty of discussion there on the manifold bolts & warping there as well .

Awesome!!!! Thank you again buddy! Can't tell you enough!... Worst part is I bought this because on a visit to FL with the family we caught a bad storm and actually rolled the Nissan into a water runoff luckily passers by stopped and helped us escape the flooding truck. So now we're kinda stuck here till this gets fixed. So all the money we had to put down and etc has us in a bad way and far from home. OK headed to make that post. Again thank you!

Couldn't see the video but from what you describe it sounds a terrible lot like mine when my manifold bolts broke. It's common on these. If your under warranty from ram just take it to the dealer they'll fix it if not just get better bolts and have em fixed. To hopefully prevent this from happening again. I paid 220$ for my passenger side. Because they were pretty deep in the block

Either drive it home and leave it at a dealership or try and go to the other dealership and either spend the night in the truck so they hear a cold start or drop it off the night before and go back or figure out a way to get a cold start- it could be a exhaust leak or wrong type of oil used as stated above-
