When is it ok to change oil to full synthetic? I have a new 17 with 700 miles and i want to change the oil to full synthetic and get on a 6 month oil change schedule since i put very few miles on them per year. I figured every june and december to keep it simple. I've read some that say (Pennzoil site) it's never too soon and it's ok to break in an engine with full synthetic and others say break in for several thousand miles with dino oil before changing over. I'm leaning towards what Pennzoil says because i will be using their products and they would know them best. What's your opinion on this? Also, since i do put few miles on the truck should i go 1 year between oil changes with full synthetic and a decent filter?

Nothing wrong with switching over now. Go for it. Id suggest on your first few oil changes get a Blackstone report so they can tell you how much longer you can run between oil changes. That'll be best way to tell.

Bryan: One thing to remember no matter what anybody within this forum says or outside this forum says there are many high-end sports cars as well as other types of engines. That come right off the showroom floor right off the assembly line with a full\100% synthetic within the crank case.

Today's conventional oil's are extremely well put together and are very close to the same performance that today synthetics offer!

You can switch at any time.

I drained my FF out of the crankcase at 1000 miles with a filter change.
Then again @ 2,500 w/Filter. Then again @ 3,500 w/Filter. Then again @ 5K w/Filter. Then @ 10K w/Filter. ---->Overkill? Possibly! Don't Care.
Then began following the OLM!

No oil is burned between the OCI!

I will probably do something similar with the 6.7L CTD when purchased in July/August!

I usually switch it out by the 1000 mile mark, as mentioned several of my cars have left the factory filled with synthetic.

How long did you go before changing out the factory fill?

I'd say this is one of those personal comfort things. like mentioned above, 1000 miles is where I change out oil on a new motor. This is also based on advice from where I get my fancy syn oil and since I have been buying oil from him for about 16 years I tend to trust his advice....

I did my oil changes using PYB with OE filter at 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000. I haven't decided what mileage or oil I'm going with next. I'm leaning towards PYB at 7,500 and then making the switch to Pennzoil full synthetic at 10,000 miles.

I did my first at about 1000 with Penzoil Yellow Bottle 5-20. Will probably go synthetic next time at about 4K.
