I got a call from the dealership yesterday. The salesman was just checking in to let me know that my truck would be going to the body shop on Monday to get the hood repainted and that it should be ready for me to take delivery on Wednesday or Thursday.

The first thing that I plan to do is to give the outside a good detailing. I would like to clay bar it before waxing but I'm not sure if I will have time.

Anyway, will the hood be safe to clay bar/wax along with the rest of the truck or should I hold off on doing the hood for a while due to the new paint?

Any advice is appreciated.

Give it a little while to let the paint finish curing, and then wax it. More of a preventative thing from what I've heard, and it wont do any initial damage, but may cause it to not hold up as well in the long run.

I would splash a squirt of water on the hood when you pick it up, and see if it beads. They may apply some polish/wax which you could just leave until the paint cures, THEN clay & wax it properly.
I would not want to polish/wax/clay it any more than you have to until that paint sures, as you could easily mar it, working contaminants right in with your good intentions.

Thanks guys. You confirmed my suspicions. I'll just leave the hood alone this time and hit it at the next waxing.

Next week can't get here fast enough.

Hold off for at least 30 days to let the paint cure.

Clay bar is for a real good cleaning. Why would you need to do that on a freshly painted hood.

I've been told 3 months - but that was 15 yrs ago... I'm sure paint technology has changed since then. I put my first coat of wax on my truck about 45 days ater it was painted.

Don't wax or do anything to the truck for at least 30 days

I'd even suggest doing absolutely nothing... the paint is very soft and fragile during the first month - I have some light scratches on the side of my Ram to prove that.

after my hood was painted, I asked my painter. He told me 30 days, but at that time we were in our 13+ days of 100+ temps.......no rain, etc. It was baking out in the parking lot every day. :D

The hood doesn't need cleaning but the rest of the truck could use it.
