So I'm looking to trade in my 2500 tradesman (6.4 hemi) for a big horn/lone star 1500 (5.7). I have nearly brand new wheels and tires on the 2500 (approximately 4200 miles truck has 5700 miles on it) so my question is should I take the wheels and tires off and put back on the stockers and sell them myself to get the most money out of them or should i see if the dealership will give me more money on my trade for them? I also have magnum RT steps (3 step LB) that I'm thinking about taking off as well to sell them. What are your thoughts?

Take it all off.

Why are you trading your new 2500 for 1500?

Any time you go to the dealership to do anything you're loosing a ton of money.

You would never get me to swap a solid axle for the junk you will get in the 1500. Secondly, just park next to a 1500, the 2500's are stout even stock, you have to do a lot to a 1500 to get the same look. Why would you want to do that, especially after upgrading it? My biggest mistake was not getting a 2500 in the first place.

Yea I absolutely love the 2500. Its an awesome truck. But its a tradesman and I want more of the fancy stuff inside bc I don't need it as a work truck anymore. And honestly I'm tired of having to get gas all the time(6.4). I would trade it in for a CTD but that's out of my price range. I'm willing to sacrifice size and payload for a little more luxury. And this won't be my last truck so in 5-7 years I can upgrade again to a CTD. But if I the numbers don't come out the way I want then I'm keeping it.

Are you trading for new? I would go in to a 2/3 dealers and see what you can do. Then pay attention to the math, it may be worth it to just keep the 2500 and pay the gas for a bit, save some coin and then go right to a CTD.

I know for me, after a few weeks back in the 1500 I'd be like WTF did I do lol.

I really doubt that you'll save much on gas here. The 5.9 hemi is also very thirsty... Depending on your driving style you could be getting 12-17 mpg average. I'm getting 14 mpg on highway.

Plus, gas is inexpensive in Texas, we're paying a dollar more per gallon in California.

You're going to loose a few grand on trade in, then loose on buying the new 1500. Plus the resale value of 1500 may be less than what you can sell your 2500 for at end of 5 years.

I don't think you'll ever get these money back on gas savings. If you want to save, drive slower and smoother.

You'll be disappointed on the "luxury" of 2500. I got big horn 2013 and yes I got nice looking large display, but you don't care about it after a couple months. It doesn't give you much more in terms of functionality, just looks pretty...

For me, the point of truck is that it's a Truck. Big, fast, comfortable, safe, capable. The little gadgets inside of it really don't make much difference in the long run, you don't notice them after a few months.

I assume it's the town or mixed mpg that you are tired of. What exactly do you average? I too am thinking very hard about going to a 1500 as my towing needs are short distance anymore.

My evic says I'm averaging 9.5mpgs. Fuelio says I average between 9.5-10.2. Everyone has very valid points too. And I appreciate everyone's input. You guys just made me second guess myself

Its a 5.7 and mine averages 17mpg easy and thats something with how I drive. I am sure it wpuld get 19 or so just on the hwy.
If you dont need a 2500 there is no reason to have one imo. They get crummy mileage and ride rough .

I understand your position but you are taking a HUGE bath. The truck you currently own is a used truck no matter how you cut it. Unless you find "the guy" who wants that truck for reasons, you won't see much of what you paid originally. And to swap vehicles for fuel economy is not logical unless you are driving 15-20K annually and even then it's questionable. DO the math. Getting 15 now? what do you hope to get with the 1500? I'm a very light foot and I am seeing 18 over the last 6K. Even if you saw 20 you would be looking at a 35% "savings". How many miles? 20K? Using those figures I calculate a fuel savings of about 300 gallons. At $3 a gallon annually you are looking at $900. Fewer miles, lesser savings. Worse economy, less savings.

You might consider a private sale of your 2500 and getting a CPO 1500 from a dealer. At least you can "save" 25-30% on the purchase and probably gain a goodly amount on the sale to offset the losses.

However, as they say in some circles

"YMMV"

Good luck whatever you do!

Yea I no longer have a need for it. Another thing that kills me is the transmission with the constant downshifts on the highway when there's any little hill. The truck itself is a beast but just don't feel the need for it anymore. We will see how it goes at the dealership

Here's the deal 1 they won't give you any more for your mods than stock. So strip that bad boy down as much effort as your willing to put into it. As far as everyone is giving you a hard time about trading it in that's your personal preference. What you should do is find what you want and figure out your deals then you can sit there and look at the big number. What is the difference in price. If that is 5k 10k 15k ect and is it worth that to you. What we just did with my wife's vehicle we went from a pathfinder to a expedition our difference was 12k and it was worth every penny to us. But everyone has there number. And that's what you should pay attention to. Wether you lose money or not it for you to figure out whether it's worth it or not.

I would a year or 2. There is rumours that a HD 8 speed trans is in the near future. That should add a few more mpg.

I’m in the same boat-
Not towing with my 2500, I bought it brand new in 2014 for 39k “has 40k miles on it now” and owe 23k. I’m headed to the dealership tomorrow to look at a 1500 Night edition in white. They say they won’t waste my time. They have it listed for 37k it msrp”s for 50k.
I will only do the trade as long as they make it so I am only financing no more than 31k- I also want the Max care lifetime warranty thrown in. Love my 2500 but it barely fits in the garage and the mileage is killing me. Plus what’s the point of equity if I can’t use it lol. Plus a 5.7 8 speed with 392”s will do me just fine. Dealers are pressed to sell before the end of the year- hoping to get about 8k in equity out of it. Sorry to Hi jack ur thread, but I have been looking at doing this same thing since ThanksGiving. I agree with you, but for me it’s a numbers game- they got to give me what I want or I won’t do it, I’ll update you guys tomorrow.

Ok so I test drove a 1500 and felt like I was in a mid size truck. You guys were right I just can't do it. What was I thinking
Lol this is funny ending.

It is totally your call as others said. Compare how both 1500 and 2500 feel and go with what you like. As others said, you likely won't save much if anything by getting 1500.

I think that many 1500 owners wished they had 2500 and many 2500 owners probably sometimes wish they had 1500 (at the gas pump).

I'm going to think very hard about upgrading to 2500 in the very very distant future.
