This is how it starts;
A couple friends and I are eating at iHOP. right across the street is a dodge dealership. The youngest of the group says rather randomly with a certain amount of authority “Ron you need to get a newer truck”. I look over my glasses away from the menu and grunt “oh?”. “Your truck is older than I am” he says. I am somewhat humored now and reply, “and”? (he is talking about my 2007) “Com’on Ron it’s so analog, it doesn’t have a hotspot, it’s so old it doesn’t even have Bluetooth”. I am chuckling now, as I say “so?” (I guess he forgot about the 86 ram in the driveway) He points to a new Rebel across the street, “and you could have paint that looks like that”. “Like what” I reply. “Shiny” he says. “Is that so” I reply. The oldest guy with us looks up but just smiles a big Cheshire cat grin. (He asked to have my 98 ram because it’s so analog) I asked him, “do you believe I should spend sixty thousand dollars to have Bluetooth a hotspot and shiny paint?” I blew my coffee out my nose when he said “Com’on Ron its CDI everyone knows that” referring to the Chris Cagle song "Chicks Dig It". (I have to admit I am rolling on the floor laughing my a** off at this point along with the other three guys at the table.) To be fair I am 58 and my young friend is 22, and all of us are veterans, there is a shared sense of humor we all have. After we quit laughing, I said my “old girl” is right as rain, I take care of her and she never lets me down, we are good thank you.
We sat there for a while; I could sense the challenge. I decided to put it out on the table, would Bluetooth a hotspot and shiny paint make my truck acceptable to todays "standards"? Its not just that, your truck is just old, tired looking. I tilted my head in wonder, you simply need to update to the current style, you know, panache he says. Short of buying a different truck how much do you think it would take to update “my panache” I ask. You can’t get there from here he says. The rest of the table gives the “ohs and ahs”. Everyone gets quite and we sit there drinking our coffee. I look across the street at that shinny Rebel. I tell you, right there I accepted the challenge. Let’s just say that Rebel is 60K for GP I said to my young compatriot. I will drop 1 tenth of that price tag, 6 grand into my truck and give it a shiny digital panache, that's on par with the shiny new Rebel. When I am done, show me what that shiny digital Rebel has over my paid for, debit free, title in my safe Laramie has. Convince me I should assume the dealer’s debit for that truck to get something more then I got. However, you must convince the other three at the table as well. If you convince us I will walk over there and buy that truck. He laughed and said I was full of sh**, and if you convince me your right, what? You’ll simply agree shiny digital panache don’t cost 60K plus interest over 8 years! Game on came the reply.
And that is how these things start.
Last night I thought to myself, self this will be fun to share, track and audit on the forum. Lets see what old analog guy can come up with.
