I will tell you from my years of experience in a body shop and any professional will back up this statement, you do not want to paint chrome, even with the best prep work it will start flaking off, bedliner is different and so is plasti-dip, with bedliner you basically grind into the chrome and it doesn't matter what imperfections you create because the bedliner fill them in, plasti-dip is like a big sticker and thats why it works so well too, paint is different, you want to have a smooth surface and if you do that with chrome it makes a weak bond, it will stick for a while but its just a matter of when till it starts to flake off, some people get lucky and have it last for a while, but once that first chip happens, its all over

Well it’s too late for my first grill lol. Here’s what I did, whether it was right or not, it’s done. I roughed up the chrome pretty good hand sanding it. Then I sprayed multiple coats of filler primer and sanded that a few times. When it was nice and smooth, I painted it with actual auto body paint when I did my fenders, then clearcoat with the same stuff. Looks wise, it came out nice. However, the grill I had bought used had a crack in it that I tried to fix, and it didn’t work out too well. So my plan was to just use it while I finished the engine build and live with it, till I had some extra change to buy a new one. Not too worried about it. What you guys are saying about not painting chrome is probably true. So if I change out grilles, I’m thinking “torture test” to see how well the paint holds up lol. I might actually have some fun with it. If the paint chips and flakes or whatever, it will prove your point.

I’m trying to stay conservative on my guesses, but it should easily be 475 crank hp

I'm really sorry for this dude, but I can't help but fall into the reflex of "that's sad"

I mean, you're doing all this work to this motor, bore/stroke/compression/heads/cam/FBO/tune, and it's only going to put out....

125-ish more HP than stock, by your estimate. While a stock SRT-8 6.4 hefts 485HP from the factory, with dodge's tuning, and all the emissions **** and room for improvement with FBO and a tune on IT.

I just really feel like it's all to waste if you can't get ~525 out of it at the crank. And that's at 6.4L, nevermind a 410, 426, or 440.

An LS7{427ci} in a vette can be FBO, cammed, and tuned to 650HP, easy. I have nothing against your epic dream fulfilling build, but this just isn't adding up logically for me.

Horsepower ain’t cheap bro, especially if you are building s mopar. I don’t know where you are getting your idea of big horsepower coming easy or cheap. This is just a building block for a bigger hp setup. I can strap a blower onto this engine and make 800hp all day. But you need a solid foundation first. Then the snowball effect of upgrading every other part to handle it. I’m not cutting any corners on this so it’s worth it in the long run. And like I said, I’m trying to stay conservative on my guess so I’m not disappointed. There are a lot of variables when you are talking power, and what mods go with it. The point of the stroker isn’t a high peak number, it’s a much stronger torque curve all over the board. If you look at dyno sheets, you can see huge gains down low where it really counts on a big truck. I’m not made of gold so I gotta start somewhere slow

And trust me, builds like this get VERY expensive. Everything needs upgraded, everything needs changed. Can’t risk leaving bad parts in. It adds up super quick. I haven’t even touched the transmission yet

Oh man i know this, my blue truck went from a quick paint fix and slightly lower drop, to a 5 month complete teardown and rebuild

Well my cam still isn’t going to show up till this weekend at least [emoji30]
In the mean time I ordered some weld on bed panels to patch the rust over the wheel wells. So I’ll be adding another paint job to the project. It’s needed to be done for awhile now. I want to get rid of the fender flares for a cleaner outside look. Never was a huge fan of them but the rust was bad enough they were needed until I wanted to tackle a full on bodywork job. This truck is gonna be brand new in a few weeks

do the fenders and grill of the 06-08 bolt right up to the 2003? im guessing you have to replace the bumper cap too since its wavy instead of flat.

do you have the floor shift 4x4? how are you going to incorporate that into the center console?

Yeah the fenders and grill bolt straight up. The bumper cap needs changed to the flat style. It looks like a pain to remove it but with the fenders off it’s all accessible.

I have the floor 4x4 shift. I haven’t had time to look into it much, but I’ll probably have to cut a slot in the side of the console and poke it out. Might need to bend the shift stick alittle, I don’t know yet. Shouldn’t be too big of a problem

thanks for the info. the front end swap is on my long list of to do's. the flat headlights should look better with a winch bumper

also you will either need to modify the existing grill support you have or buy one for a 06-08 ram
