There is almost no difference between the Ecodiesel and the Gasser. In fact, the gasser is actually way more complicated than the eco
That's funny right there!!!

Gas engines don't have a DPF or urea injectors
Which will be the most faults on a modern diesel engine

Of course there are some very obvious differences between them. We can ALL list the differences. BUT, the point is, they are NOT as complicated as people make them out to be. The entire point of a Diesel engine is they are MORE RELIABLE. Reason being, they are SIMPLER. Allot less "stuff" on them.

Do you think the modern day gasser in the Ram doesn't have a bunch of complicated "crap" in it?? Ever look at one?? If for one used to build my own motors for fun, and at one point could almost do it blind folded. Today, I would be hard pressed to be able to name half the parts on the modern day gasser!

Yes you are correct in saying the gas Engine has a bunch of 'crap' on it.. most of it is to raise power or lower emissions.
it's pretty impressive of the power , efficiency and low emissions of both modern Gas and diesel engines..
The modern diesel is anything but simple anymore, with common rail fuel injection , all sorts of pumps to achieve the 40,000 psi injection pressures, can-bus computers and electronics..twin turbos and then all the emission crap that surrounds it ( which as I stated before is where most of the maintenance issues come from).. reliable- maybe.. more simple than a gas Engine- I think not.

Hmm, virtually no difference? And where did that come from? Going to be a shock to the rest of the world, I assure you, they're all under the impression that there are major differences. Good thing we have you to point that out.

Besides, it's not a matter of similarities, differences or complexity, but the experience/knowledge of the mechanic or service tech.

19.5? Sounds low, is that imperial gallons? Or while towing?

I have to agree, if it's MPG you're looking for, the 3.6 is likely the way to go. Wish I could have found one I could afford, I'd have one now. Though I'd have preferred the 3.55 rear just for the towing capability.

it's while towing the boat

Love my truck. It' a 2014. 80k miles. I've had 3 recalls. Had to have the GPS and in dash computer replaced. Now I'm dealing with a $2,500 def gauge problem that seemsbto be pretty common with most. I' hoping it falls under recall.

The Gen 4 Hemi is actually pretty traditional and straight forward compared to all of today's turbo'd gas engines. Which is one big reason why it's probably going bye bye in some years.

We all know what happens when you supercharge a Hemi. But that is not practical for FCA to make big power readily accessible across their line ups with the EPA crawling up everyone's ass.

I'd much rather deal with a Hemi repair than an Ecoboost repair.

Thinking about buying a ram 1500 crew cab 4x4 with ecodiesel. Need pros and cons. Will be daily driver. Drive 60 miles round trip to work all interstate.
Have 2015 ecodiesel crew. Engine made metal at 11600 miles. Had a whole new long block put in. Dealership said they were aware of these problems and had the replacement put in four weeks. Now at 22800 miles, with no problems.... By my experience and reading about other folks with same experiences on the eco diesel forum, I don't think I'd go this route again. Might look at the Colorado, mini Duramax next time. Haven't heard any problems with them yet... And they are reported to have great torque and economy.

I've had an '09 and a '14 hemi. Loved them both, towed the camper trailer decent and not a single problem. Now I have a '16 Eco Crew long box (6' 5") 4x4. Just turned over 46000 kms and (so far) not a single problem. On average, I drive to/from work about 15 minutes highway + 15~25 minutes city (depending on traffic) Monday to Friday. Weekends vary, but I don't sit home very much. With the Hemi I filled up (well over $100) once a week. With the Eco (under $100) every two weeks. That's the difference for me and I find the Eco tows better not having to turn her up to 4500 rpms to make it's torque.
I loved my Hemis, but so far trading for the Eco was one of the better decisions I've made in my life.
Oh, and I compensated for the price difference of the motor by giving up some bells and whistles that after a couple weeks you don't miss anyway... although I do miss my sliding rear window sometimes [emoji39]

I have the 2015 Crew Cab Ecodiesel. I have been able to get as much as 29 miles to the gallon on a long drive. I currently use it as my every day drive. 59 miles to work, in the summer I got 27 and now that it is cold I let it warm up a few minutes before I drive and still near 24. I hac the V-6 gas before and am in love with the additional power and mileage. It does have a higher maintenance cost but I feel it is worthit when I pull my 24 ft camper and get 16 mpg.

I don't think it is loader than my V-6. and definitely quieter than my sons Cummins

The ecodiesel is definitely without any doubt, quieter than the Hemi. My neighbor and I compared his stock off the shelf 2016 hemi my Eco, and it wasn't even a contest. They are almost dead equal in decibels (measured with the iPhone app) on the outside while standing 5' in front of the truck They sound very different, but same decibels. Inside the truck, the Eco blew the Hemi away, much to the shock of both of us. I don't recall the exact numbers but it was something like 10% quieter at idle, and closer to 20% quieter when running 30mph.

First off, they purposely make the Hemi louder so it sounds "cool". This is especially evident when running 30mph +. Secondly, I think they might have added more sound deadening on the eco, but that is just a guess ?

I actually removed a bunch of the sound deadening 'apparatus' and I still get comments about how quiet it is.

I purchased a used 2016 Lonestar with the Ecodiesel and love it. 3.92 rear end is great for pulling my boat (17+ mpg loaded) and 25 to 28 mpg highway mileage running 65-70 mph. Only problem I had was an EGR cooler failed, had a crack and was loosing aprox 1 qt of coolant per 500 miles. As for the comment above about regeneration, I've put over 25K miles on and have never had the warning notice that the Diesel Exhaust Filter was getting full and needed to drive at highway speeds to clean it out. My experience tells me (based on my previous life) if the vehicle operates only short distances and temps (including exhaust temp) never get to operating range then you may have Regen problems. To circumvent that issue you can utilize the ability to manually shift the vehicle and try to maintain around 2000 rpm. That should prevent excess soot build up in the DPF.

My eD is in the shop now with crank or bearing fail. Looking like 4 months too replace engine. 60k miles. Loved the truck but will sell it. Talked with parts mgr. sounds like early engines had some problems. Don't call ram customer service. I'm sorry is all you get.
