Way back when I first noticed this issue, I layed under the truck and had my wife shift from park to reverse and neutral to reverse, so I could isolate where it was coming from. The dealer tried to tell me it was brake noise and I knew that wasn't right.

The grinding/noise is coming from inside the transmission,. I'm pretty confident of that.

They wouldn’t be driving it for an extended period of time that way or driving it at all.

That's true. Whenever I shifted into 4WD, the grinding noise disappeared. When I shifted back into 2WD, it came back.

Mine has 'clunked' like this since new, but it hasn't grinded. Is this a different sound than you guys have?

So my truck has the same grinding noise, I’ve had it in once for that and they said it was low on trans fluid, thought it was the issue but it wasn’t. Brought it back and they said the driveshaft is causing the grinding noise that you are hearing. I am thinking the piece that holds the u joints on is the issue. I won’t know exactly cause the driveshaft is on backorder and no eta on replacement coming in.

If you keep going from park to drive/reverse it’s going to start clunking. Going back and forth puts the transmission in a stuck mode, like your stuck in snow/mud. It bumps the line pressure up and will make the shifts harsher.

Honestly, your clunking sounds more like a loose chain in the transfer case. You can see the U joints not stutter at all when torque is applied and removed.

Could be that or excessive gear lash in the rear diff or the transmission itself. His truck is a diesel with much greater torque than my hemi so I'm sure over time it's harder on driveline components

I believe My u joints do stutter (as you put it) when I hear the grinding (at least I'm pretty sure they do....its been awhile)

So today was the day that the dealership was going to tear into my rear end and diagnose. Turned out to be a giant time waste.

I checked the pickup in around 7:30 am, and the service writer gathered some info and drove the truck around the building towards the service shop. I figured that they were going to start work on it. I BS with another customer for about an hour and then decide to go for a small walk. I walked passed the service department but did not see my pickup in any of the stalls. I keep walking and see it parked in the very back of one of their storage lots. Maybe they are already done? I decided to go and sit next to it, in case they were finished.

I end up waiting for over an hour and a half before I walk back to the service writer who checked it in. He saw me coming and said "let me see where they are with your pickup". It looked like he placed a call, then he hung up and said that the technician was going to bring it in and take a look. I speed walk back over to my spot by my pickup and wait, expecting to see a technician walk over and grab it. Nothing happens for another 45 minutes. Then I get a call from the same service writer saying that they diagnosed it, determined that the tracloc system in the differential was bad, and they will need me to bring it back in when parts come in, which will now take 2-3 weeks.

I grabbed the pickup and took it home. After verifying with my dash cam that they straight up parked it at 7:30 in the morning and never touched it, it was very evident that they wasted three hours of my time without even looking at the pickup. Absolutely ridiculous.

Will I ever have a fully functional pickup that I paid $62,000 for new????

I apologize for the part delays that your dealers are experiencing, @Nickx86 & @JFV1134. And even more so for the way you were treated by your dealer.

Please do not hesitate to follow up with me via private message, as I would be happy to get cases escalated on your behalf so that a specialist can work alongside your dealers to try and get the parts in as soon as possible!

Did you ever get the rear end taken apart and fixed? I’m having same sounds and issue you’ve had. Dealer replaced transfer case, transmission with new units. I’m thinking my drive shaft or trac lock system is the culprit.

Thanks guys. That's exactly what mine does and sounds like.

The dealer says it's normal and with you guys input, it sounds like it is. Good to see you guys have that many miles with no issues. My truck just started about 500 or so miles on it. I have 2300 now.

I guess I'll just run it and not worry about it anymore since you guys were nice enough to post. Thanks guys, you have put my mind at ease.

Dealer tried to tell me it's brake noise, it's not, as i said in my initial post i can see the driveshaft shake when it makes that noise. It's very brief, maybe a second or so. Bruuuuuup, that's it.

I still have 4.5 yrs and 57k left on my power train warranty, so hopefully it holds up.

Thanks again guys. I was worried the dealer was feeding me bull crap when they said they checked other customers trucks and they all did it, but had none to show me when I got out there.

Tranny grinding is not normal. Could be a gear out of synch, pump starving for oil, etc.

I’m not sure what it is. The transmission was replaced with a new unit. A new transfer case. I took it to a private transmission repair shop and they told me it’s my drive shaft. But the symptoms that the other guy posted about when he shifts into Reverse while in 4wd the noise is gone and in 2wd you hear it for a quick second or two. The noise is like a rumble or grind noise. Supposedly his dealer stated it was a issue with the tractor loc system in the rear diff. But he never posted the results and if it fixed it or not. Tomorrow morning I have an appointment at my dealer again and I’m hoping we can diagnose it finally.
