Can I just run it with the small evap leak code? Seems most posts here go nuts trying to clear and fix this code, is there any down side to just running it?

update, 1 week later, ordered the parts, purge vale and leak sensor, appointment to swap them out this tues. Mech says its a minor code and should not impair any use of vehicle. Put 150 miles on it for a vaca, no issues.

plan is to swap out those parts and clear code, hold breath and hope we don't have to smoke test it.

I've had the same code in my 2005 for a few years; no issues, still drives just fine.

Purge solenoid is an easy swap, will take you 5 minutes to change. I wouldn't have a dealer do it for me unless it's under warranty still.

P0456 is a pretty simple to diagnose issue. A member here is a tech at a RAM dealership and told me how to check it. Basically, if you have a long crank before starting the truck after it sits for a while, its the purge solenoid.

To verify this, if the truck has been sitting for a few hours, press the accelerator to the floor and crank it for a few seconds. (it will not start when the accelerator is pressed) Then, let off the gas and it should start instantly.

Essentially that just clears out built up gasses in the intake from the evap system.

If your truck is not having a hard time starting when P0456 is present, this is not your issue.

Chances are it is the Purge Valve
If air will blow through it, then it is bad
If Air will NOT blow through it, it is still good

When you have a Trouble Code, the Cruise Control will not function

ugg, mechanic swapped out valve and sensor, cleared code last tuesday. Here I am a week later and it came back, bringing it in today to see if its the same code, probably is. Guess I am joining the club of people going nuts trying to solve this engine code.

So I have the gas cap code. I have alfaodb and went in to look at codes and all that pops up is a short for my third break light. Makes sense as apparently that isn’t functioning. I’ve cleared that code twice but never seen the evap code show up when I use the check engine light in alfaodb because since clearing I am getting check engine light. I know gf said she pushed more gas after it stopped so that doesn’t help. My thing is why wouldn’t it show the evap fault in alfaodb?

I replaced every component in the system, and I still got the code. I finally performed a smoke test on my truck this spring, and there is a small leak coming from the top of the fuel tank. I need to drop it one of these days to fix it.

Wonder if that was issue? This came out of nowhere a little bit after my gf told me she filled it up and pushed more in after the pump stopped. Told her no more of that. I also tried looking with alfaodb and I have a check engine light along with a gas cap light. No clue why this evap code isn’t showing up with alpha odb

Thats called the evap canister vent filter located on the side of the filler neck, caused sometimes by overfilling the gas tank, shut off after first click.
