Went from a 14 Sport 4wd with 3.21 to a 17 4wd with 3.92 because I want to lift it and add 35s and I swear I can't tell much difference between the two. I even got underneath the truck yesterday to check the tag on the rear axle and it did say 3.92. Neither truck will spin the tires from a dead stop on dry pavement. Am I missing something here? The only difference is the 14 was a quad cab and the 17 is a crew with short bed.

The Crew Cab weighs a little more and if it has big heavy 35" tires vs stock ones on the 14' then yeah I doubt you will notice any big difference.

I'm still running stock set up on the 17. Factory tires, suspension, etc. The lift and tires should be done a few weeks from now. I'm not complaining just saying I can't tell the difference most people claim there is.

How many miles on the truck?

I don't really feel a big boost in power until 3-4K miles and after my initial oil change.

If you wanna roast tires then I would recommend a Mustang. These 4x4's aren't made for sliding all over the road, you have a 6K# truck, you'll be creating all kinds of unnecessary wear tear romping around trying to burn the tires off, but I guess it's your money...

Try this, go to truck, start truck, push ESC button once, place truck into drive, briskly push pedal to floor.

Works for me. At the same time the truck will shake some while spinning. But it will burn the tires up in a straight line.

Yeah wheel hop can get out of hand and start breaking things if you let it get carried away. But my 3.21 geared truck without a limited slip will lay out 2 long tracks if I do this. With ESC on, it wont let me have any fun.

I haven't tried turning off the esc. And I'm not into roasting the tires. I had always read here and on other sites about how much more pull the 3.92 had compared to the 3.21 and just wasn't feeling it.

Some say there is programing that holds back off the line throttle when new. I do know the 3.92 adds a couple thousand pounds towing capability.

I have never driven a comparable 3.21 truck. But I would definitely wait several thousand miles before making a true judgement

Mine has 3:21s will blow the tires off at will! I can spin the crap out of them at 15/20 mph easy

Hey 69, what gear are you in when you're blowing off tires at 15-20? I'm guessing second, because first is so low in the 8 speed. I think your second is pretty close to being the same as my first, 545RFE. I have done a grand total of 1 burn out. Had Sugarpuss video it. Tires are expensive, and l am cheap! Smoke, tires screaming, engine roar, 2 big ol black marks...... lt is addicting.

Maybe it's just me then if y'all can tell a big difference. The truck only has 300 miles on it right now. I'm not really too worried about it. Didn't get it to burn the tires. Got it so I could lift it and run 35s which it should do with no problem.

one thing I have noticed with my lil 15 is it has no problem getting up and moving out ie many say they have a delay ie from the start. Honest to God my truck does suffer from this issue, anyone care to take a guess as to why???? Thanks.

Pretty sure its droping nack into 2nd gear, surprises me it spins them so easy.

I may have to try the 15 mph rolling burn out in first, just for the heck of it.

I don't have the 8 speed. Even tho l like the tranny in my truck, l wish l had the 8. From what l gather, from doing a lot of reading here, the 8 is much more forgiving of the 3.21, than the 5/6 speeds are. But l would still have to have a 3.92 if l had the 8.

I went from 3.21 to 4.56 on my 14' CC on 35" M/T. The RPM's at 60mph increased from 1500 to 1800. I'm not surprised you can't tell the difference with 3.92. I will say, 4.56 is a great gearing for 35's with a 6 speed though. MPG increased a bit and the truck is much more alive down low. If I had gone with 4.10 or less, I'd wager I'd be questioning if they really regeared the truck at the shop. It does not blow the tires off even still. It may spin some at launch but with soft rubber in an M/T you aren't going to hear it. I'm sure it would spin fine if I used the brakes though. I'll do it when it's time for a new set of $1500 tires.
