Guys, in terms of longevity and less issues, would v6 be a better option since it doesn't have the issue with the manifold bolts and lifters/cam? Thoughts ?

Not sure. Not every hemi has the cam lifter issue. I haven't read about high mileage Pentastar engines yet.

Yes, but I don't recall hearing about any Pentastar issues here period.

What you need to remeber and think about is, how many hundreds of thousands of ram trucks with the 5.7 Hemi are out there with none of these problems. You’ll hear about the handful of common issues from a few but you won’t hear from the thousands of owners that have these trucks without the problem.

The cam/lifter problem isn’t a big and common as you think. And the manifolds is not just a 5.7hemi specific problem. It has and will continue to happen on a variety of vehicles

What type of fuel do you guys with the hemi run? I guess 89 is recommended but 87 is acceptable.

Just me personally but I run 93 in my hemi. It does fine on 89 but JMO I think it does better on 93, plus I get a smidge better mileage on 93. Run 87 in the wifes 3.6 penstar. I have also ran non ethanol 89 in my hemi and it was great, just availability of non ethanol makes it a PITA.

I have a V6 and drive between 25,000 and 30,000km a year with it. Mainly highway. I get about 850 to 900km on a tank. I have 175,000km on the thing as I lost this.

I love the thing, does everything you need it to. Have the tow package and the upgraded rear axel. I recommend it to everyone who needs a truck for anything, I feel like it gets the job done.

If I could have found one I wanted at a price I wanted to pay when I bought mine, I'd have the V6. But the only ones I could find at my price were the stripped down work models.

I think both are good motors but I'm pulling my 4000# boat through the mountains of Az. and its does great and I don't need the Hemi. I have not pulled the max of 7600# and if I pulled that much often I would opt for the Hemi/3.92 truck. Mainly its my daily driver and I really like this motor for its passing power and mpg that is running in the 22 range calculated with no tow. Anyone who is not towing heavy should at least drive the 3.6 because I think most will be surprised at the power this truck has.

It's a shame that dude who put 4.10s behind a Pentastar, immediately bailed out on us. I would have loved to hear more about that set up.

I'm a Pentastar fan. Ford could have put any engine they had into the GT. (Not the Mustang) They chose a (twin turbo) V6.

It'd be interesting to know how much longer the 5.7 is going to be around. The updated 5.0 that Ford puts the 19 Mustang, makes the 5.7 look like a Has Been.

But the 5.7 isn’t made to compete with the Mustang GT. It’s the 392.

The 5.7 will be the first Hemi replaced, but I wouldn’t call it a has been quite yet though. It is still relevant and doing a good job competing where it needs to. Chrysler just has no “real” performance aspirations for the 5.7 because they can’t really do anything with it. Between gov’t regulations and the fact that a performance version of the 5.7 already exists in the 392 they don’t have many options but to replace it. When the engine really is no longer relevant in the near future, it will be replaced most likely with the turbo I6.

Why do you think I6 vs. a V6? The inline 6 produces a really nice torque curve and with only one rod per journal a durable low flex crank for longevity would be good reasons. A V6 would weigh less, cost less and fits a smaller engine bay and Chrysler has not developed an I6 since the slant 6 in 1960. BMW likes the I6 and so do I. My brother and I raced a 61 Valiant with a 225 c.i. with the torque flite that ran 13.50s and 110 in the 1/4 mi. back in 69 and 70 so I have an affinity for inline sixes.
On the 5.7 I agree with you its the next to be replaced but it will have to be a really great motor to do so.

I could be wrong but I think the 4.0 was developed by AMC before Chrysler took over.

Modem, please re-read my post that you reposted. I specified as plainly as I could: the GT, NOT THE MUSTANG!

The GT is Fords supercar. Think : Vette, or Viper.

My point is: the 5.7 Hemi is already getting its ass handed to it by "little" 5.0.
