ESIT: Post #11 for clearance pics

The time has come, my Cooper AT3 XLT’s only made it 32k miles but I cannot fault the tire. Long story short, had an alignment issue that my tire shop had trouble correcting, went on a long trip and bam, wore a pattern into the tire. Alignment and everything is/was fixed but the pattern was bad enough the tire never “leveled back out” so it was just a matter of time. If they had worn evenly, it suspect I’d get another 10k out of them.

Anyway, by some miracle they found a set of 35” Defender LTX’s and are supposed to be in tomorrow. Apparently a lot of the Defenders are on back order, at least on the sizes I was contemplating. Looking forward to these, been going back and forth on getting these for awhile now, guess I’m getting old..............

EDIT: finally got them installed, I’ll give some feedback once I’ve put some miles on them.

I really loved my Defender LTXs They're a great option
I’ve run them in the past on other vehicles, will be putting a set on my wife’s Pilot here shortly.

I was going to put these on the truck a couple of years ago but my wife pulled my man card when she asked “will those look beefy enough with the lift on your truck?”........so on went a set of mud terrains, followed by the current AT3’s.

I was reasonably impressed with the square shoulder of the LTX, certainly NOT an aggressive tire, but it doesn't have a rounded edge like AP tires.

How big of a spacer are you running? And whats your UCA clearance like? I'm about to pull the trigger on a set of 35x12.50x20s for my truck with the same stock wheels. I've read various sizes needed for a wheel spacer. I don't want to go any bigger than necessary.

No spacer needed sir! I’ve got about a finger width of clearance, absolutely NO RUBBING. Didn’t need spacers on my previous 35’s either (Cooper AT3 XLT’s).

Tires that spec out to no more than 12.1” wide when mounted on a 9” wide rim will fit without needing a spacer.

A lot of 35’s spec out to 12.5” when mounted on a 10” wide rim but on a 9” rim they will measure 12.1”. Toyo MT’s for example, spec out to almost 13” wide..........

General rule of thumb: For every 1/2” of rim width, the tire width changes .2”

Check the tire manufactures websites, they list all the measurements and most will indicate what rim width they used for the given spec.

I’ll snap a couple of clearance pics in the morning.

Knuckle clearance for those interested. No spacers with stock 20x9’s. Not the best pics, I’ll get some better shots if requested. The clearance is tight but there is absolutely NO contact. I had my previous 35’s for 32k miles and no contact, these have a smidge more room (I can just about get a finger in between there........yes, I did type that and expect the jokes that follow ;))

Note for pic #2: the little “clean” mark is not from the tire rubbing, you’ll notice there are NO marks on the tire from contacting the knuckle. Had these on for a week, already put 1k miles on them.
